Stawell Post office built in March 1875 replacing the 1860 weather board building in the early Township of Stawell. The stucco exterior was described as modern Italian, and the building had excellent proportions. Special reference was made to the use of slate from Great Western. The foundations are of solid granite. The difference in this photograph to 85.01 would be approximately 100 years. Stawell Post Office possibly before 1880's on Corner of Wimmera and Main Street. Thomas Stoddart was a miner turned local stockbroker. He bought 12 statues made of Carrara marble during a visit to Italy in 1882, and gifted them to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. The sculptures were placed on pedestals of Sicilian marble and on bases of Victorian granite. Else Oertel was an internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. Else (a German) was interned in a camp where Russian was being taught & so took up lessons. Her husband was away on business in Germany at the outbreak of war and was not interned with them & therefore Else was also motivated to learn Russian because it was possible she would be repatriated to the Russian sector of Germany at the end of the war (namely Chemnitz, Saxony). This book is one she used in these lessons.Foolscap size exercise book. Composed of unlined pages hand-bound together inside a manila folder(?) / other cardboard. Spine has lined paper on outer & inner spine has lined paper with sums handwritten (perhaps new use for old maths lesson book?).|Book contains lessons in Russian (possibly dication?) with occasional German notations. 'Lost Glories: a memorial to forgotten Australian buildings' was published by David Latta in 1986. It tells the story of a number of significant Australian buildings that had previously been demolished. A chapter in the book was devoted to Goathland, later known as Tara Hall. To supplement the text, he sourced photographs from a range of suppliers, chiefly the Royal Women's Hospital which had once owned Tara Hall, but had sold it in 1960. This is one of the photographs donated to KHS by the author. Porte-cochere, Tara Hall, circa 1957. The main entrance to Tara Hall (previously named Byram, Goathland and Lowan). The entrance, through a porte-cochère, was located on the side of the house facing east. During construction, commentators described the house as being in the ‘Elizabethan style’. The architectural style of the exterior, with its innovatory use of red brick and Italian tiles was more influenced by American models. Edward George Kilburn, of Ellerker & Kilburn, designed Byram for the industrialist George Ramsden in 1888. Like so many ships that were used during WWII, she was laid up and remained idle for several years, until finally in 1948 the US Government sold her at auction and the highly decorated USS Barnett, ex MS Santa Maria was officially purchased by the well known Italian Multi Millionaire ship owner Mr. Achille Lauro on April 13, 1948. Soon she headed for a Baltimore shipyard where she received some work to ensure that her engines that had been shut down for a considerable time, were back in full working condition. When the work had been completed she was certified for her delivery voyage to Italy! The delightful all white MS Surriento was ready to depart Genoa on her very first voyage to Australia in her brand new passenger/migrant liner role. Functional object - Porthole Frame, Russell & Co, 1888
This portion of the porthole frame was part of the fittings of the Antares. The Italian barque “Antares” was an iron three-masted sailing ship built in 1888 by Russell & Co of Port Glasgow. The ship was originally named the “Sutlej” but was renamed the “Antares” in 1907 when sold to the Semider Bros of Genoa, Italy, where it was registered. The vessel left Marseilles on the 18th of December 1913 with its master Captain Gazedo destined for Mullaly & Byrne of Melbourne with a cargo of roofing tiles but failed to arrive. The wreckage was found near the Bay of Islands, twenty-two miles east of Warrnambool, after a body had washed ashore. Some of the timbers washed up were charred by fire, and a small boat's stern board with the name "Sutlej" led to the identification of the wreck as Antares, which had been reported missing. According to later reports, the Antares wrecking was overshadowed by war news at the time. A young local boy had remarked that the Germans had arrived off the coast as he had seen them firing off shells and rockets, but his story was passed off as a joke. These rockets were most likely the distress signals from the stricken ship. The Italian barque, clipper, Antares was sometime later reported as overdue. The wreck of the ship was later found at the base of a cliff at the Bay of Islands near Warrnambool in November 1914; there were no survivors.The Antares is significant as it was a sail trader carrying international inbound cargo during the early part of the 20th century. It is part of the Great Ocean Road Historic Shipwreck Trail and as such is registered as a protected wreck in the Victorian Heritage Database VHS S34 .Porthole frame section, brass, large part corroded away. This portion of terracotta roof tile was salvaged from the wreck of the Antares by Flagstaff Hill diver, Peter Ronald. It has letters, numbers and symbols impressed into the clay by the manufacturer. A photo of a mural in Libya painted by a South Australian Sapper of a bottle of Abbots Lager. The photo, and two others, were sent to Melbourne Legacy in 1979 by Legatee Syd Wilson of Yamba NSW. He thought Melbourne Legacy might be able to use them to generate money by selling them for advertising or publicity. He said they were enlargements of snapshots he had found in his old army trunk. The text says 'Keep Going. Fill up in town, but a good drink is bloody hard to get'. Legatee Wilson's letter says the murals were: 'painted on three walls of a white concrete Italian block house (Police Check post I think), some 18/20 miles west of Tobruk, between Tobruk and Derna, and near a captured Italian airfield, somewhere about February 1941. Obviously they were painted by a Victorian Sapper. They were very well done, by a competent Sign-writer/artist, in correct and excellent colours (captured Itie paint no doubt - there was plenty in their Naval Stores at Tobruk).' (NB Itie was slang for Italian) From the AWM website the signs were painted by South Australian painter, SZ538 Sapper Leslie John “Doc” Dawes, 2/3rd Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers. There are several photos on the AWM site including the building the three murals were on.Photos taken by a Legatee when on active service in Libya in World War 2. The Victory Medal (also called the Allied Victory Medal) is a campaign medal - of which the basic design and ribbon was adopted by Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Romania, Siam, Union of South Africa and the USA. This medal was never awarded singly. It ia accompanied by the ribbon of the British War Medal but this medal is not held in the School archiveThe medal is of historical and social significance for the College. The Holgate medals were the first WW1 medals held by the school archive.The Victory Medal is a 36mm diameter circular copper medal, lacquered in bronze. The obverse shows the winged, full-length, full-front, figure of Victory, with her left arm extended and holding a palm branch in her right hand. The reverse has the words ‘THE GREAT / WAR FOR / CIVILISATION / 1914-1919' in four lines, all surrounded by a laurel wreath. The 39mm wide ribbon has a ‘two rainbow' design, with the violet from each rainbow on the outside edges moving through to a central red stripe where both rainbows meet. Personal history written by Bill Anderson of his experiences in the Australian Army in WW2. Badges, King George's Day
These badges with the image of King George V of England were sold during World War One to raise funds for allied nations in the war, especially Serbia, Russian Poland and Italy. King George V reigned from 1910 to 1936. The badges were sold the day before the King's birthday celebrations with one known date being 2nd June 1916. Functional object - Royal Typewriter associated with the J. Mann & Sons General Store
The typewriter was owned by John Stephens, a grocer at the J. Mann & Sons General Store in Wodonga from 1971. John purchased the typewriter in the 1940s. He died in 1990. The maker of the machine, Royal Typewriter Company Inc. was founded in New York City in 1904 by Edward B. Hess and Lewis C. Myers. The company was purchased by Italian typewriter and computer manufacturer Olivetti in 1986. John Stephens typewriter forms part of a collection of objects from the J. Mann & Sons General Store held by the Wodonga Historical Society, and reflects the social history of the city. Machine - Glider – Sailplane, 1960s
The Morelli M-100S 15 metre Italian sailplane first flew in 1960 and over 220 were built in Italy and France. The design was a development of the M100 incorporating changes to fit the international rules for “Standard” class competition gliders: thus the designation “S”. The name applied to the M-100 gliders built in France was “Mesange” This example has undergone major restoration to display condition by Museum volunteers. In the main the airframe is made up of the glider serial number 69 formerly registered in Australia as VH-GUD. The restoration incorporated parts of another wrecked M100 (serial number 71). VH-GUD was previously owned by Darling Downs Soaring Club (from 28 October 1967) and Beaudesert Gliding Club (from 30 October 1971). It was test flown in Australia on 28 October 1967 and logged 1533 hours 41 minutes from 2731 launches until it crashed and was wrecked on 11 February 1978. Meter Multi General Purpose, circa mid to late 1900's
This general purpose Multi-meter was manufactured after 1950 and used by the SEC Vic (Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme) from that date until late 1900's. It was used to measure very small voltages associated with the operation of the various Hydro Generators. The readings were able to be shown by the resistor in use in the current circuit. During this time period, high quality testing instruments were either sourced from Europe or England. This particular meter was manufactured in the Netherlands. This type of "old" analogue meter was replaced by digital meters whose electronic components are a fraction of the size of the older analogue ones.This analog General Purpose multi-meter is quite a large (for handheld mobile) apparatus which permits the easy monitoring of electrical variations within the large SEC Victoria Hydro Scheme's electrical generators. These generators are powered by the hydro force of "stored" water at a higher altitude. The establishment of both the NSW and Victorian Hydro schemes was achieved from the mid 1900's to the 1960's. At this point in time the need for additional power sources to quench both an industrial and domestic demand for electricity was purely an economic and not and environmental (carbon reduction) factor. This hydro scheme was instigated by "the Government of the day" as a bold move and was the major force of the World War II refugee and "technical" workforce inclusion of skilled and unskilled migration into the Australian environment. Although this mass "invasion" of workers with families was thought of in some circles as intrusive, the expansion of population post war years and its integration into the Australian rural sector, produced the multi- lingual multi-cultural diversity of later years.This General Purpose Multimeter is an analogue meter i.e. it has a needle arm that moves across a scale of divisions. This is a large(hand held) device due to the mechanical movement system within and the large size of its electronic components of its circuitry.There are two black bake-lite push buttons operating the wire inserts Positive/negative leads at the top. The meter (protected with a glass window) has clearly marked graduations (top - volts, bottom amperes). Below this are two bake-lite dials (left "potentiometer the right one measuring range selector). Italian grenade, one of a number slightly different, mostly aluminium and all called Mod 35. Outside components missing. Nicknamed Red Devils by the Allies. This one was souvenired by William Humphrey Robert Jeffers No VX52782, enlisted 5.4.1941. Served in the 2/24th Batt 9th Div and served in the Siege of Tobruk and Middle East Campaigns. He was discharged from the 2nd AIF on 19.10.1945.Main section two piece aluminium case/container; rectangular slot on sides of top half. History on the elite formation aerobatic CFS. First display team were titled "The Red Sales" it was formed in 1962 and were then flying DE Havilland Vampires T33 jet trainers. In February 1963 a new team known as the " Telstars " was formed flying Italian designed Aeromacci MB326H jet trainer. The "Roulettes " were formed in late 1970s and have thrilled thousands of spectators since then.Unframed copy of "The Roulettes". The RAAF Aerobatic Team. The Roulettes from July to December 2004. Painting - SS Ascanius, Dacre Smyth
Completed in December 1910 as a steam passenger ship she was requisitioned as a troop transport for the Australian Expeditionary Force (AEF) in 1914. She was returned to the owner in 1920 only to be requisitioned again in 1940 by the Admiralty for use as a troopship. After the war, the Ascanius brought Jewish emigrants from Marseilles to Haifa and was sold to Italy and renamed San Giovannino for Cia de Nav. Florencia (A. Motosi), Genoa in 1949. Functional object - Pulley Sheave, Russell & Co, 1888
This ship's pully sheave was part of the Antares rigging. A pulley sheave is a circle on a shaft that is manufactured to hold up movement and change of way of a cable or/and rope, or transfer of power between the shaft and cable or/and rope. A pulley is a unique mechanism that is used to leverage the lifting of heavy loads to required heights. The Italian barque Antares was an iron three-masted sailing clipper built in 1888 by Russell & Co of Port Glasgow originally named the “Sutlej” and renamed in 1907 the “Antares” when sold to the Semider Bros of Genoa Italy. The vessel left Marseilles on the 18th of December 1913 with its master captain Gazedo destined for Mullaly & Byrne of Melbourne with a cargo of roofing tiles but failed to arrive. The wreckage was found near the Bay of Islands twenty-two miles east of Warrnambool after a body had washed ashore. Some of the timbers washed up were charred by fire, and a small boat's stern board with the name "Sutlej" led to the identification of the wreck as Antares which had been reported missing. According to later reports, the Antares wrecking was overshadowed by war news at the time. A young local boy had remarked that the Germans had arrived off the coast as he had seen them firing off shells and rockets, but his story was passed off as a joke. These rockets were most likely the distress signals from the stricken ship. The Italian barque/clipper Antares was sometime later reported as overdue. The wreck of the ship was later found at the base of a cliff at the Bay of Islands near Warrnambool in November 1914, there were no survivors.The Antares is significant as it was a sail trader carrying an international inbound cargo during the early part of the 20th century. It is part of the Great Ocean Road Historic Shipwreck Trail and as such is registered as a protected wreck in the Victorian Heritage Database VHS S34.Pulley sheave; brass, with recesses full of concretion. A photo of a mural in Libya painted by a South Australian Sapper of a bottle of Victorian Bitter Ale being poured into the Melbourne Cup trophy and horses racing. The photo, and two others, were sent to Melbourne Legacy in 1979 by Legatee Syd Wilson of Yamba NSW. He thought Melbourne Legacy might be able to use them to generate money by selling them for advertising or publicity. He said they were enlargements of snapshots he had found in his old army trunk. The text says 'A good thing for the Cup but better for the tonsils'. Legatee Wilson's letter says the murals were: 'painted on three walls of a white concrete Italian block house (Police Check post I think), some 18/20 miles west of Tobruk, between Tobruk and Derna, and near a captured Italian airfield, somewhere about February 1941. Obviously they were painted by a Victorian Sapper. They were very well done, by a competent Sign-writer/artist, in correct and excellent colours (captured Itie paint no doubt - there was plenty in their Naval Stores at Tobruk).' (NB Itie was slang for Italian). 'The photos were there when we were coming back from Western Libya sometime in March 1941, prior to the 6th Division going to Greece.' From the AWM website the signs were painted by South Australian painter, SZ538 Sapper Leslie John “Doc” Dawes, 2/3rd Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers. There are several photos on the AWM site including the building the three murals were on.Photos taken by a Legatee when on active service in Libya in World War 2.
