Wooragee Landcare Group
Photograph, 5 September 2004
This photograph was taken at Samaria Farm on Sunday the 5th of September as part of a day trip by the Wooragee Landcare Group. The event was about looking at land use on small farms and as a social get-together for the Group. Wooragee Landcare was also researching how small landholders could run some enterprises around the time of this trip. Samaria Farm is located in northeast Victoria, near Mount Samaria, which is located 130 km northeast of Melbourne. Samaria Farm was owned by Sue and Due Matheson at the time of the trip and had a renowned rose garden, pigs, poultry, alpacas, and goats on their nine-hectare farm. The rose garden consists of 3000 damask roses. Samaria Farm distils the oil from these roses and is the only farm in Australia to do this. Rose oil has historically been used for religious and medical use. 20 kg of rose buds are picked by hand every day, which is then distilled and produced 5 to 8 ml of oil. The entire four-week season produces 80 to 100 ml of oil. Rose water is also created during this process and produces about 300 litres per season. Along with the oil, the Farm also harvests lemons, lime, olives, and oranges. The Farm is currently owned by Utako and Anthony since 2022, with Vicki and Allan Wight being the previous owners. Wooragee Landcare Group was created in 1988. Its core mission is to work towards eradicating animals and pests from the land to protect the natural vegetation and promote revegetation projects. This photograph is a great example of the type of events that Wooragee Landcare Group has organized, while educating the public about the importance of land use management. The group is important to the community and for the environment.Landscape coloured photograph printed on gloss paperReverse: WAN NA E0NA2N2. Tool - L-30 Chain saw, Lombard, 1962 - 1964
This chainsaw was one of the earliest models sold in Australia. It was manufactured by the Lombard company which was established in 1894 when Nathaniel Lombard developed the first practical water wheel governor in Roxbury, Massachusetts, USA. In 1904, the company moved to Ashland, Massachusetts. During the first World War, Lombard Governor produced hydraulic lathes for the manufacture of artillery shells At the conclusion of the war, Lombard expanded into the areas of chain saws and plastic molding injection machines. This model, the L-30 was only produced for 2 years from 1962 - 1964, primarily due to safety concerns and the fact that it did not have any way to sharpen or tighten the chain. This chainsaw was sold by Mann of Wodonga and donated to the Wodonga and District Historical society by David Mann, owner and manager of Mann Wodonga. This item is significant as it was produced for a limited time. It was also sold by a prominent Wodonga business.A single operator chain saw from Lombard, Ashland, Massachusetts, USA. The chainsaw was relatively lightweight but had no safety features such as a chain brake. It was made primarily of sand cast magnesium. The main cylinder was constructed of aluminium with a cast iron sleeve. It had a manual oil pump, the crankshaft operated on ball bearings and it had a maximum rpm of 4,500. See the Model profile in the accompanying Media item for details. On side of fuel tank: "ONE HALF PINT/SAE-30 OIL/ FOR EACH/ GALLON GASOLINE/ MIX WELL IN SEPARATE CONTAINER/BEFORE FILLING" On opposite side: "STARTING INSTRUCTIONS 1: FILL FUEL TANK WITH PROPER FUEL MIXTURE ( AS NOTED ON TANK) 2. Souvenir - Souvenir Cream Jug - Soldiers' Memorial, Wodonga, 1921 - 1938
This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. A wide range of small china pieces carrying scenic views of holiday destinations or key locations were a popular kind of souvenir during much of the 20th century. Several different items have been produced to commemorate Wodonga and its landmarks over time. These items document key changes in Wodonga and its heritage. This plate depicts three key landmarks in Wodonga. THE SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL in Wodonga was unveiled on Tuesday 18th November 1924. It was designed by Messrs. Hosken & Co., of Hawthorn, Victoria. The monument is all of Australian workmanship. The pedestal is made of Harcourt granite, 9ft x 9ft at the base, and rising in seven courses to a height of 10ft 2in. The emblems (rising sun and wreath) are of bronze, and the lettering of the inscription and names of fallen soldiers are in raised lead letters. Originally the Memorial was completed with a full life size, 6ft in height, sculpture of an Australian soldier in Sicilian marble. The memorial bore the inscriptions: ERECTED BY THE RESIDENTS OF WODONGA AND DISTRICT IN MEMORY of the Men of this Town and District who fell in the Great War, 1914-1919, Also in grateful recognition of the men who served and returned. “Lest We Forget.” In 1982, due to frequent vandalism and high cost of materials to repair, the soldier statue was removed and later installed at the RSL Rooms. THE WATER TOWER is a major landmark of High Street, Wodonga. It began operation from January 1924 until it ceased operation in 1952. It stood unused for a decade until the lower section was modified and put to use as “ The Tower’s Cobbler’s Inn” in 1962. In 1972 Wodonga City Council proposed to demolish the Tower. Their suggestion received an unfavorable response from the city’s citizens, so the Tower still stands today. THE BAND ROTUNDA was officially opened on Sunday 5th September 1920 at the naming of the triangular reserve at the corner of High and Hovell Streets as Woodland Grove. The Wodonga Band gave a public performance on this occasion. The tri-coloured ribbon, which stretched across the entrance to the Rotunda was cut by Mrs R.H Murphy, daughter of Mr. John Woodland, secretary of the Wodonga Shire Council for 35 years, after whom the area was named. The rotunda has since been moved to Martin Park, Wodonga. This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is also an excellent example of souvenir items created featuring landmarks to represent the city of Wodonga.White glazed porcelain cream jug with grooved square handle. The base is unglazed. Photograph - Border United Co-op Breweries, c1911 - 1915
The Border United Co-operative Breweries Limited was formed in 1911 by the amalgamation of The Albury Brewing and Malting Company Limited and The Anglo-Australian Brewery Company Proprietary Limited which operated breweries in Beechworth, Tallangatta and Yarrawonga. The Anglo-Australian Brewery was owned by the Billson family. By August the new plant was operating near the Union Bridge on the border of Victoria and NSW as shown in this photo. However the enterprise failed in August 1914 when not enough co-operative shares could be sold and also due to declining water quality. In December 1914 its spirit merchant’s license was transferred to the newly established Murray River Proprietary Company. In 1922, the brewery and 32 acres of land was sold to Mr E E Waite. Waite sold the buildings for removal. This image represents buildings related to early industries in the Albury-Wodonga region.Black and white image of brewery buildings. Postcard, Gallipoli, troops landing at Gaba Tepe, 1915
A postcard with a black and white image of small boats being towed on a rope through water. Each boat is carrying several soldiers, and other ships and boats can be seen in the background. From the title it is a landing party going ashore near Gaba Tepe, on the Gallipoli peninsula. The back of the post card is blank so it was kept more as a souvenir than sent as a letter. There are other similar postcards in the collection.Images of Gallipoli were captured on postcards as mementoes. Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. Postcards as souvenirs or as correspondence would have been familiar to the first Legatees as they had served in World War 1.Black and white postcard with an image of small boats being towed on a rope through water. Photograph, London Bridge, Great Ocean Road, 01/1990
London Bridge, pre 1990 was a double-spanning bridge connected to the mainland. The stack was created over hundreds of years, with the weaker layers toward the base being eroded away by wind and water to form the two bridges. The span closer to the shoreline collapsed unexpectedly on 15 January 1990, leaving two visitors, whilst uninjured, stranded on the outer span before being rescued by helicopter. Two coloured photographs of the London Bridge, on the Great Ocean Road. This photo was taken days before the collapse of the geological feature.
