Administrative record - Receipt book
Beehive buildings. This was originally the Sandhust Mining Exchange and as such was the oldest purpose built exchange in Australia and was one of only two in regional Australia. It was initially established in the 1850's to service the miners of the area. It's first double story incarnation as the Bendigo Stock Exchange, contained up to 2000 stockbrokers and 5000 shareholders. In 1871 the building burnt to the ground and the new and current building was completed in 1872. The modern building was designed by Charles Webb, who was also responsible for the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. and features a pitched glass roof similar to the Royal Arcade, Melbourne.Unused Beehive Store receipt book (nos. 001204-1 to 50). Yields information about the correspondence that was sent to Ballarat from Bendigo about underground services under tram tracks, the changes and the list of the people it was sent to.Set of five documents: Documents 2 and 5 same as Reg Item 4946, but marked up to show changes to the Bendigo docs for the Ballarat situation - in pencil. Cover sheet pinned to the four sheets is a handwritten ink foolscap ruled sheet showing all the addressees that the letter was to be sent to. The letter from the immigration and Labour Bureau revolves around J.W.Pierce getting his sons wife passage to Australia. The son is also J.W.Pierce No 261 21st Batt AIF who was in France. His wife’s name was Hazel whom he married in late 1916. James returned home in 1919, there is no records in his service documents as to his wife getting passage to Australia. This is George Frederick Pierces brother. George won the DCM.
