Brief history of the Guiding Light Square Dancing club, which began in April 1974 by Colin and Margaret Fox. Practice sessions were originally held in the Fox house but were soon moved to Kooyong and continued for 21 years. Social activities, such as pie nights, picnics and outings together, were held in between demonstrations, practice sessions and trips to other square dance clubs. This ski run was built for the 1960 Australian Downhill Championships conducted at Falls Creek. It may have been built in conjunction with the SEC. This crossing was just below the Falls Creek Resort entrance. It had a vertical elevation of approximately 1,500 feet. The building pictured is a former SEC building which became the "Galleon" Ski Club and was later know as Cooroona. Michael's Building was the club rooms for the Ithacan Philanthropic Society from its inception in 1916 until 1958 when the society acquired its own building at 329 Elizabeth Street.The Ithacan Club occupied the first and second floors of Michael's Building. A 'kafeneo' was located on the first floor and social activities such as dances, children's parties and Christmas and New Year's celebrations were held on the second floor. For many of the early Ithacan migrants to Melbourne, the Ithacan Philanthropic Society was like a home away from home. The story of: 'Coat of Arms - The carriage wheels and lamp commemorate the early beginnings of the City about 1840 when the Heidelberg Road Trust was the local authority; the wavy band and wattle blossom are symbolic of the River Yarra, whilst the supporters represent the customary mode of transport at the time. The mural crown is the emblem of local government and these perpetuate the distinctive record of the City of Heidelberg in having the first suburban form of local Government of the Colony. An owl, the symbol of wisdom, is also embodied in the crest as our City is named after Heidelberg in Germany whose University founded in AD 1386, became one of the most famous seats of learning. The motto "Industrica" provides a link with the early seal of the City.
