Rev Charles Lane (1823 - 1910) Wesleyan Methodist minister. The Observer 15 January 1910, p.36: The Rev. Charles Lane, better known In South Australian Methodism as "Father" Lane, died at his residence, Dorset Cottage, Magill, on Saturday, at the advanced age of 88 years. The deceased clergyman attended the Methodist Conference in 1900 —the year of his jubilee as a minister--and was accorded a vote of congratulation. Mr. Lane was born in Dorset, and be associated himself with the Congregational Sunday school at an early age, and when 16 years old took a practical part in religious matters. Then he removed to another town and joined the Methodist Church. In 1855 a request for a number of energetic Christian workers came from Australia, and 10 were sent out in the ship Walmer Castle, among the number Mr. Lane. He was received into the Victoria ministry in the following year, and received his first - charge at Ballarat. He proved a successful preacher in the early days of the Victorian goldfields, and accomplished much valuable work. He was impressive in the pulpit, humorous on. the platform, and welcome everywhere. About 1878 he wag transferred to the South Australian Conference, and from that time until being placed on the supernumerary list in 1889. he laboured in all the most important circuits. He was President of the Wesley an Conference in 1886, and displayed conspicuous ability in fulfilling the important duties associated with that office. He had resided at Magill for 17 years, and up to the time of his death had evinced a deep interest in work to which he had devoted .the best years of his life. In 1964, Robin and Patricia Boyd spent several weeks on a world tour - Boyd took a leading role at the International Design Conference in Aspen and he also visited Chicago, Yale University, and New York’s World Fair. The Boyds then travelled on to England, Finland (especially to see Tapiola), Russia and India to see Le Corbusier's Chandigarh, and also Hong Kong and Thailand.Colour slide in a mount. Robin Boyd was appointed Exhibits Architect for the Australian Pavilion at Expo ‘67 in Montreal. This hat was worn by members of the Country Fire Authority on ceremonial occasions.A peaked black woollen gaberdine fireman's hat with a black petersham band edged with silver binding. There is a silver badge with the letters CFA- Lieutenant in the middle of the band. On each side there are two silver buttons with 'cfa' stamped on them. Attached to these two buttons is a black plastic band. There is green plastic under the peak. The bowl of the hat is lined with red woven cotton and manufacturing details are stamped in gold. Wilfred Clarence Busse 1898-1960, born in Chiltern, was a barrister and author. His family moved to the region during the gold rush and continued to reside in the area, purchasing land adjacent the Murray River. Busse attended school at Wesley College and studied law at the University of Melbourne. Busse went on to become a barrister, often in the chambers of Sir Leo Finn Bernard Cussen (1859-1933) a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria. Time spent on a Victorian station in his early twenties, as well as careful documentary research, informed the writing of his historical novels of bush life. "The Blue Beyond; A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia" was written in 1928 and published in 1930. "The Golden Plague: A Romance of the Early Fifties", written in 1930, won the T. E. Role gold medal for the best historical novel published that year and went on to become a best seller. His passion for the region led him to write “The History of Chiltern”, which was published in a serial form in the Chiltern Federal Standard from 1922-1923. He was a member of the Chiltern Athenaeum upon his death in 1960.This book is of considerable importance to Chiltern Athenaeum as it was written by Wilfred Clarence Busse, a barrister and author born in Chiltern. Busse drew inspiration to write novels from his life growing up in Chiltern which is apparent in "The Blue Beyond; A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia".A small sized book in blue hardback binding, with the title and the author`s name in dark blue fonts at the top of the front cover. Miss Florence Perry was at the centre of a strong and vibrant musical culture in Clunes which featured a brass band, a men's mouth organ band, an orchestra and church choirs. The success of Miss Perry's choirs in competitions was a source of pride in the town and a cause for celebration. After their success in Melbourne in 1906, the Juvenile Choir were greeted at the Railway Station on their return by the brass band and well wishers before attending an impromptu concert at the Town Hall. Miss Perry herself was born in Clunes in 1880 and worked as a music teacher in the town. Her father was the conductor of the Clunes Orchestra.
