Artwork, other - Public Artwork, Diana Nikkelson, Goanna Ground by Diana Nikkelson, 2006
This is an Aboriginal artwork that depicts a Goanna Totem. Designed by Ballarat-based, Gunditjmara artist Aunty Diana Nikkelson, the design is inspired by the artist’s totem and is a tribute to the first artists of the region, the Wadawurrung people. It acknowledges Aboriginal survival and the dynamic regeneration of the Aboriginal art and culture in the region. The artwork is in-set to the basalt paving along Police Lane by a series of etched footsteps, which evolve from human footprints to goanna prints as viewers approach the rear of the Art Gallery of Ballarat. The artwork was originally located only outdoors and half of it was brought into the Art Gallery of Ballarat in 2011, when the former Federation Plaza was enclosed to form the Art Gallery of Ballarat's McCain Annexe. The artwork was created in 2006 as part of the cultural festival of the Commonwealth Games. The artwork is of cultural and aesthetic significance to the people of BallaratSand blasted petroglyph forms into bluestone on laneway surface. Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Painting, Lisa Carman, S.O.S, 2019
The painting explores the mental health issues often faced by those who work at sea as a result of loneliness, isolation and illness, amongst other things. This seafarer’s face is made up of thousands of SOS Morse code symbols: dot, dot, dot dash, dash, dash dot, dot, dot. Morse code was used to signal to land that a ship or crew was in trouble. This seafarer is in trouble- his face says it all and speaks volumes. Mental health issues are often hidden when we look from afar but when we take the time to look closer and listen, the signs are often there.Lisa Carman entered this painting to the Maritime Art Prize 2019 and donated the artwork after the exhibition.Naive, Marine artLisa Carman, MTSV Collection Squared shape painting depicting a portrait in blue and dark tones of a sailor with a beard wearing a beanie. Yarra City Council
Artwork, other - Mural, Rebecca Atkinson, Queep Queep, 2023
'Queep-Queep’ means ‘birds’ in Woi-wurrung language—the language of the Wurundjeri people—the Traditional Owners of the land on which the building is standing. Referencing what lived and flourished in this area prior to European invasion, the artwork acknowledges the important Aboriginal history of the area now known as the City of Yarra. The six native birds depicted in the artwork can all be found living within the City of Yarra: the male red-rumped parrot, kookaburra, superb fairy wren, rainbow lorikeet, raven, and wedge-tailed eagle. Many south-eastern Aboriginal people recognise the wedge-tailed eagle as Bunjil—the creator spirit. Bunjil is the head of the Kulin Nation and is very powerful. Bunjil created the land, waterways, animals, plants and even the people. He is watching over the land to ensure that we are caring for Country—reminding us to respect ourselves, respect others and respect the environment.'Queep-Queep' is a site-specific artwork commissioned for the new Richmond Kindergarten, Lord Street, Richmond, 2023.Two aluminium birds (a wedge-tailed eagle and a raven) at the entrance to the building, and a large, colourful mural of Australian native birds painted in a graphic style on the other side of the wall facing into the playground.accompanying plaquebirds, bunjil, country, kulin nation, environment, public art -
