The Victorian Rifle Association governs the operation of rifle ranges and target shooting clubs throughout Victoria. The Association was formed in 1860 and held its first individual competition at the end of that year. These programs were used by C. Curtis of the Orbost Rifle Club.The Orbost Rifle Club existed in the early 20th century. (There are records from 1900). It folded in the late 1970's. Australian Natives' Association was a mutual society founded in Melbourne in April 1871. The last branch closed in 2007 in Western Australia. The Australian - American Association of Victoria was formed in the 1940s for the betterment of relations between Australia and the USA including that in the area of education. The Bogong State School entered many competitions successfully. The Australian Natives' Association supported social well-being which, in this case, involved presenting a book to the Bogong State School in 1949 and 2. Australian-American Association of Victoria's letter is dated November 22nd 1950 to the Bogong School for first prize in the Project Book competition.A4 cream cardboard with Australian emblem at the top. Book, The poetical works of George Crabbe, Prior to the book prize presented on Christmas, 1884
This book was awarded to Lilian Frances Millard for an Essay written in the second form. Lilian entered the Ballarat College Girls' School in January of 1883 at the age of 11. Parent/Guardian listed in the original register as Edwin Millard, residing at 46 Pleasant St.During 1877 - 1891 Ballarat College accepted enrolments from female students. The school holds the original register of this period and notes that Lilian Millard entered the school in 1883 when she was 11. Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in brown calf with gilt edging, gilt lettering and decoration on the front, back and spine. Tin, Swallow & Ariell, Ltd
Biscuit tin: late 19th century Swallow & Ariell operated continuously in Port Melbourne from 1858 to 1991. The former Swallow & Ariell’s factory buildings, now The Anchorage, continue to add interest and pleasure along Stokes, Rouse and Princes Streets. Thomas Swallow, born in Reading, travelled to California and Ballarat before setting up a business making ships biscuits in Port Melbourne. His business partner Ariell died in 1877. He then went into partnership with Frederick Derham, his son in law. Company farms around Shepparton provided much of its wheat, and after 1889 most was ground into flour on the Port Melbourne premises. For the year ending 1 May 1920, the factory used 51 tons of butter, 2,740 eggs and produced more than 66 lines of biscuits. They also made puddings, elaborate cakes and ice cream. S & A was a significant employer – locally referred to as S & A College. At the height of the South African war it employed 1900 workers but even in 1991 it employed 450 people.Pink and brown clover-shaped ornamental biscuit tin decorated with pictures of a girl (central panel), 2 dogs (lower section), 2 rabbits (upper left-side panel) and 2 birds (upper right-hand panel.
