Uniform - Cap, Commonwealth Government Clothing Factories Melbourne, 1960's
Demonstrates uniform cap manufacture, badge and has a strong association with a former Ballarat Driver - Norm HuntSEC Motorman/Drivers/Conductors cap - green cloth exterior, grey cotton interior lining, brown leather internal hat band, black cotton hat band on exterior with a plastic band at the front half of the cap terminating in two small SEC metal buttons on either side, black plastic peak fitted with cap or badge No. 20, nickel plated silver, in the centre of the cap above the hat band. Sewn on the inside is a label "Commonwealth Government Clothing Factories Melbourne (very faded)" and stamped "6 3/4". See also Reg. Item 3044 for an ex Geelong cap. Yields information about the track maintenance activities of the track gang in Ballarat, the work they did, notes, names and other information.Collins Australian Diary, 1963, No. 324 printed by Collins Bros, pattered dark red cover with green cloth binding on cover, card covers, sewn sections with ruled sheets providing a diary for 1963, one week per double page. Has "useful information" sheets at from the diary. Used by the SEC Ballarat track gang to record their daily work, leave, welding, track cleaning, truck driver etc In the Memoranda section (page 4 and 5), list of names and addresses of track gang and notes on materials used, costs, scrubber use and hours, and length of track. Demonstrates aspects of Safeworking on the Ballarat Tramway system from 1960 to c1936 when replaced by electric signs. Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "CARLTON ST. CAR SHED LOOP." stamped in. Has an open rounded end which forms a handle or a point where it could be hung on a peg. The part with the words "CAR SHED LOOP" appears to have been ground down and a previous location name taken out and replaced. Used a means of authorising a tramcar to have sole use of the track between the named points to avoid head on collisions. Safeworking object - known as a section staff. Not known when made, but in use until the introduction of the electric signalling in the mid 1930's by the SEC. Photocopy of an article in the State Electricity Commission of Victoria Magazine, Contact, Vol 3, No. 2, Aug 1938 titled "The Development of Ballarat's Electricity Supply". Two A3 sheets. The item with six photographs details the history of the development of Ballarat's Power Supply. Details development of the initial power supply in Dana St, the take over by ESCo, DC power initially, expansion, introduction of AC in 1925 to Ballarat, the takeover by the SEC in 1934, changeover from DC to AC, expansion to outlying areas, Buninyong, Creswick etc. Gives description of installed plan, boilers, storerooms and the stores systems. Has photos of the Dana St. building, Ballarat A power station, Ljungstrom Turbo Alternator and three of the stores area. Record revised 3/4/2019 to add digital images with those from Andrew Cook CD. Each item had a thin strip of paper attached by staple to the top left hand corner, giving the Vol. No. details.On rear of 2nd A3 sheet in blue ink details of contact with the BTM by M. Demonstrates aspects of Safeworking on the Ballarat Tramway system from 1960 to c1936 when replaced by electric signs. Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures. Demonstrates what can happen in use - has been run over by a tram - possibly being exchanged on the move or some other story.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "STURT ST RUBICON ST " stamped in. Has an open rounded end which forms a handle or a point where it could be hung on a peg. The staff has been run over by a tram and had the last part of the object cut off. Used as a means of authorising a tramcar to have sole use of the track between the named points to avoid head on collisions. Safeworking object - known as a section staff. Not known when made, but in use until the introduction of the electric signalling in the mid 1930's by the SEC. Ninety six page book stapled with a heavy card cover, saddle stapled, printed on matt paper, titled "Talking Trams" and written by Jan-Werner Hente. Has a number of pages of light manila colour paper stock printed with a sepia ink. Many black and white photographs. Major Sections include: Pages 7 - 24 - text as if on a "Talking Tram" tram tour of the Bendigo Trust tram., with relevant photographs. Pages 26 - 47 - details briefly the history of each tramcar in the fleet at the time and some scrapped trams. Pages 48 - 49 - map of the route with reference points. Pages 52 - 69 - "If only all trams could talk" - the story of the trams in Bendigo and its mining history, including horse, battery, steam and electric trams, Victorian Railways impact and some of the personalities of the Bendigo Tramways. Pages 70 - 92 - the SEC era and closure and the early Bendigo Trust days Pages 93 - 96 - provides a rolling stock listing - all Bendigo trams. Sign - "AIR BRAKE OPERATING END"
Demonstrates how the SEC used signage to communicate important information to staff.An enameled metal plate sign in an off-white colour, hand painted with black lettering. The sign reads "AIR BRAKE OPERATING END". The sign is curved, and all four corners have been angled. There is a hole in each of the corners to enable attachment to the tram cab. Horizontal lines have been drawn to ensure the even height and spacing of the lettering. The back of the sign has been painted a brass colour, although some of this has flaked off with wear. Sign - "SOLE AGENTS AUSTRALIAN GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 217 CLARENCE STREET SYDNEY AND C/R QUEEN AND LITTLE COLLINS STREET MELBOURNE HP9266"
Demonstrates how the SEC used etched signs to provide information for their staff.A small, etched brass metal plate reading "SOLE AGENTS AUSTRALIAN GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 217 CLARENCE STREET SYDNEY AND C/R QUEEN AND LITTLE COLLINS STREET MELBOURNE H.R.9266". The etched lettering background has been painted black, with the lettering proud in brass. Although the reverse was originally painted, much of the paint has worn off. Demonstrates how the SEC used signage to confirm procedures for Tramway Crews. A metal, brass coloured sign originally etched and painted with black for the lettering and border lines. The sign has been overpainted with green paint. The sign gives detailed instructions to Tram Crews who may be involved in an incident which delays the service. Plaque - PLAQUE, 38TH BN COMFORTS FUND, 38th Battalion Comforts Fund, C.1921
This plaque was originally placed in the Foyer (Vestibule on original plans) of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Bendigo in 1921. After closure in 2016-18 for the renovations to SMI the plaque was then placed in what was originally called the "Writing Room" now called "The Building and RSL History Room". The plaque had the gold paint renewed about 2012 - 15.Plaque marble, grey with streaks of white through, inscription is engraved with Gold paint.
