On 13/8/1914 Red Cross was set up in Victoria as a branch of the British Red Cross. This coincided with the outbreak of WW1. Its initial remit was to supply comforts packages for soldiers. This expanded to the Voluntary Aid Detachments' (VAD) who cared for sick and wounded soldiers in hospitals or on transport ships. In 1929 the Red Cross Blood transfusion Service began. After WW11 it continued to expand into all domestic and overseas humanitarian operations. The Kangaroo Flat group was first mentioned in the newspapers in August 1915.Black and white rectangle photograph. Edges have been hand cut. Bob Hymans Collection Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This document is significant because it outlines plans for the development of the Falls Creek Tourist Area.A newspaper advertisement and transcript aimed at people to apply to establish new businesses in Falls Creek. This badge belonged to F.J. Browne and would have been worn during World War I. Hermes (Mercury) was the messenger of the gods and known for carrying a staff known as the Caduceus. The caduceus included two snakes topped off with a set of wings. Caduceus is from the Greek root meaning “herald’s wand”.Francis James Browne died in Sydney 1963. He had a long career in obstetrics and gynaecology. Summary of appointments include: General Practice in Wales, Maternity Department of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, 1st director of obstetric unit, University College Hospital London. Retired and continued postgraduate teaching in London and NSW. Married to Grace Cuthbert, who was director of Maternal and Baby Welfare in NSW. The Ballarat School of Mines Athletics Team of 1919 were the inaugural winners of the Inter Techncal Athletics Competition known as the Herald Shield. The team is photographed with a repouse shield which was made by the Ballarat Technical Art School (a division of the Ballarat School of Mines) The 1919 Ballarat School of Mines Students' Magazine reports: "One of the most successful gathering ever witnessed in Ballarat took place on the City Oval on Saturday 9th, when the Technical Schools of Victoria particiapted in their first combined school sports. This event was the first of its kind ever promoted, and provided an interesting and exciting display of athletics. Last yeat the Junior Technical Schools of Victoria competed for the "Winner Cup" for pepetual competition, in which Swinburne Technical School was the successful winner. This latter competition proved such a success that it was decided to incorporate with the senior Technical Schools, and form an association to encourage sport throughout the Technical Schools of the State. This was achieved by the generous response of the proprietors of the "Herald," who kindly presented a handsome shield to be known as the "Herald Shield' for pepetual competition for the Senior Technical Schools of Victoria. This, by the way, was designed and executed at our own Art School. ..."
