EDHS Newsletter No. 268 February 2023 Prior to the extension of European people into the lands of the Nillum-bik in the late 1830s the Wurundjeri people had been meeting in the area now known as Eltham Lower Park for thousands of years. Waterway junctions had a particular attraction as tribal meeting places and the junction of the Diamond Creek with the Yarra River (Birr-arung to the Wurundjeri) was one such important location in terms of aboriginal culture. The sculpture “Not Just a Pretty Place” by Aleks Danko, located near the junction of these two watercourses pays tribute to this important cultural location. The first European settlers were squatters or leaseholders and itinerants such as timber workers. Records of their early occupation are sketchy but the Eltham Lower Park area was probably included within the pastoral run established in 1841 by Henry Foley. He sold his leasehold in 1845 to Joseph Wilson who in turn sold it to Frederick Faulkner soon after. From this early history the Eltham Lower Park area has undergone many changes and has been developed to provide residents and visitors with a range of passive and active public open space, including even being used for various horse racing events. Reverend Ken Ewins (06/05/1929 - 11/08/2002) started training at Otira in 1956 and moved to Manangatang in 1957 as a Home Missionary. He entered Queen's College in 1959. In July 1909, a modest 12-page booklet was put together by members of the fledgling Old Ruytonians Association (ORA) and distributed to the Ruyton Girls' School community. It was one of their first projects, and their aim was to nurture continuing interest in the School among former and current students. They named it "The Ruytonian." At first, The Ruytonian was produced twice yearly, and always bore a plain cover with a simple name banner. Initially, it was the work of volunteer editors from the ORA, but in 1913 they handed the publication over to the first student editors, Esther Gibson and Lucy Tickell. Since that time, the style and content of The Ruytonian has continuously evolved. The biggest shifts occurred in 1942 when it transitioned to a yearly publication, and in 1969 when it moved to a larger A4 format with a cover image specifically selected for that year.The record has strong historic significance as it pertains to the fourth oldest girls' school in Victoria, Australia. Ruyton was founded in 1878 in the Bulleen Road, Kew, home of newly widowed Mrs Charlotte Anderson (now High Street South). Due to the age of the record dating back to 1961, we can infer it is one of the few remaining complete, intact and original examples of The Ruytonian from this period. Therefore, it can be considered an outstanding representation of its type, and is a reference example for research in early Victorian school history. Used by Ettore Alessandri who came to Australia in 1930's. He had land at Marlo and used this jack to clear the property of trees and stumps in 1940's and 1950's. The Trewhella Monkey jack was invented by the Trewhella brothers to help land clearance in Australia during the 1880's. Two jacks were made a 5 ton and a 10 ton. This item is a 10 ton model having two extension bars. The longer spear is used for larger tree work and the smaller spear for general work and small trees. Both models had two lifting claws at different heights. Th lower claw was useful for roots. The top claw was intended for going under loads and the bottom claw used for rolling timber. In 1929 the cost of the 10 ton model was thirteen pounds ten shillings.This item is an example of the machinery used by the early settlers to clear land. A 10 ton monkey jack. It has two extensions (spears) and two lifting claws. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. Swords were issued to Australian Light Horse in 1918. Light Horse in period 1920 - 1940 were equipped with swords. Some soldiers including Trooper G R Fear chose to obtain their own swords. In 2005, members of the PMH&PS undertook a study of the residents of the houses in a Port Melbourne street precinct from the 1880s to 1960. The area is bounded by Evans Street, the E side of Bridge Street, S side of Williamstown Road, Farrell Street both the E & W sides plus the section of Ross Street between Farrell and Bridge and the part of Derham Street between Farrell and Bridge. The resulting map and an interactive CD won the Best Community Research, Registers & Records project at the 2007 Victorian Community History Awards. The project was launched on the railway reserve near the corner of Evans & Farrell streets.
