This is a set of 14 photographs of a 4th Field Survey Squadron undergoing an abseiling activity, as part of adventurous training held at Mount Remarkable National Park, South Australia in May 1987. It is evident the training focussed on teamwork, leadership, abseiling, rock climbing, field craft and living off the land survival skills. Elements from units of the Army Reserve also participated in the training. While many recruits could already drive when they joined 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles it took many hours of instruction and training before they were licenced to drive heavier, more complex army vehicles both on and off road and under combat conditions. Members of the Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps (WRAAC) were posted to Army Reserve units in the 1980s and 1990s. They were rarely posted to Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) but were invaluable in the A1 Echelon driving fuel, ammunition, ration and water supply vehicles. Each disease is described in length, how to nurse, what complications may occur and precautions to take, eg with Typhoid Fever, urine needs to be boiled to prevent spread of disease, container is to stand in antiseptic, kept separate, and if in the country, buried. Notes state:" the nurse must do all in her power to induce rest and sleep with the patients, eg warm sponge, frequent comfort positioning in bed." Other diseases detailed are Meningitis, Phthisis, Diptheria, Scarlet Fever, Measles, Pneumonia, all needing isolation nursing.
