Edward ( Ted) Salamy (1903-1977) succeeded his father in business in Warrnambool as a jeweller and was at 179 Liebig Street when he retired in the 1960s. On 1st December in 1924 he obtained an amateur radio licence ( Call sign A3AJ). This was the 35th licence issued in the State of Victoria and the first in Warrnambool. The original licence cost two shillings and sixpence. Amateur radio, still a popular hobby today, was particularly important in the 1920s when few people had radios of any sort and there were no provincial radio stations. People were able to access amateur radio sets to listen to such broadcast as overseas cricket matches. This amateur radio set is of considerable historical importance as it belonged to Ted Salamy, credited with being the first to operate an amateur radio station in Warrnambool.This is a rectangular box containing five valves, a radio frequency mechanism and three coils with fine copper winding. The mechanisms are connected by wires and metal screws. The box has a raised black -composite material front which has a voltage meter, three switches or knobs and a tuning dial. These labels come from the Western Hotel in Warrnambool . The Western Hotel at the corner of Timor and Kepler Streets in Warrnambool was opened in 1870 and was a prominent hotel in the area until it closed in recent years. Thomas Hillier was the licensee from 1901 to 1906. Clothing. Long pointed sleeves, fastened with one press-stud at the wrist. Full circular skirt, lined with cream, synthetic lace type fabric. Fabric of the gown is a small floral type design,in a corded style, on a fine net backing. Sleeves are not lined. Back upper bodice has a lining in a double thread net. The sweetheart neckline is edged with a fine tulle frill. Bustline panels gathered top and bottom, and joins a peaked midriff panel, 15.5 cm deep at the centre bustline. Woodrow Hats, Piccadily, were the makers of fine felt bowler hats. Associated with men's formal wear of the 1940's. Round black fur felt bowler hat with upturned brim and black decorative bow and ribbon around the base of the crown. Internal crown has a leather in-lining. The box is hard cardboard with branding on the front in a brown square : London Hats and a crown logo above this wording. Inside the hat around the crown is a leather in-lining sheath which states "The Myer Store for Men". The inside crown base has a branding which indicates : "Woodrow Hats and Crown and Lion logo, fur felt, The Myer Shop for Men, The Isis, The Woodrow".

This box and matches were owned by Lindsay Thomson and purchased by him for use at a scout jamboree - Senior Scout Venture which was held on Fraser Island, north of Brisbane in January (1-7), 1951. (Matches were not officially allowed to be taken by the scouts onto the island.) It was for Scouts over 15 years of age who had reached the first-class standard. The jamboree was extended by one week because of a suspected case of poliomyelitis. A photo of the Orbost contingent returning to Spencer Street Station Melbourne was taken by The Leader newspaper. A box for Bell's Waxies. It is a rectangular shape coloured red, white and blue. The waxed matches are made of fine twisted cotton threads. The contents are in a sliding tray. There are some matches inside. This bust was commissioned and made in the years before Holroyd's retirement from the bench. It is not known precisely when the bust entered the Library collection or the circumstances of its execution and commission. Justice Holroyd (1828-1916) was a judge of the Supreme Court for 25 years, after a successful career at the bar. Charles Web Gilbert (1867-1925) was a largely self taught sculptor, only tackling the medium of marble in the years before World War One. After the war he made a number of War Memorials, but his best known work is his statue of Matthew Flinders, the explorer, in Swanston Street.The portrait of Justice Holroyd is of interest as an unusual depiction and commemoration of a Judge.
