St Hilda's Church Everton, WW1 Roll of Honour - contains 16 names of members of the Everton Community in Victoria who served during the First World War including Nursing Sister Alma Louisa BENNETT (1890-1922) who trained at Melbourne General Hospital. She moved to Western Australia and continued nursing until the advent of World War 1. She immediately sought to enlist but was not granted her request until 1916 and was eventually sent for nursing duties in India. Her arrival coincided with the first convey of wounded after the fall of Kut in Mesopotamia. She was immediately given charge of a ward at Victoria Hospital. The following year she was appointed Matron of the hospital ship "Herefordshire" which transported sick and wounded soldiers from the mouth of the Tigris River to Bombay. Her next appointment was to the 34th Welsh Hospital at Deolali 150 miles from Bombay. The hospital was huge and she took charge as Matron. After 17 months at Deolali BENNETT was awarded the Royal Red Cross Medal First Class one of the highest distinctions in the British Nursing Service. When peace was declared she travelled to England where she continued to nurse in an Army Hospital. During her stay she was invited to Buckingham Palace where she was presented with Red Cross Medal by King George V. BENNETT returned to Victoria and was invited to join the nursing staff at Melbourne's Epworth Hospital with prospects of becoming Matron. Ill health intervened and she died in September 1922. The statement reads as follows:- "The ornamental shield with a casket giving the History of all the pupils who offered for War service in the 1914 - 1918 War was made by the pupils of the Sloyd (woodwork) class and Mr Kidman headmaster. He also wrote the honour book in fine calligraphy. A framed collection of their photographs was donated by Mrs. J.B. Richardson. These were unveiled in a special ceremony at the school on the 17th October 1921. Also in 1921 an Avenue of Honour of gum trees was planted by schoolchildren and residents, along both sides of the Boorahaman road in front of the school. I do not know the exact date most of these trees remain. When the school was closed in 1949, local residents were invited to remove what ever they fancied, so Mr W.B. Richardson chose the two above mentioned items. After the death of both parents - last one in 1977 - Clarice Tobias and her Husband Jim took care of the shield and the photo`s. During 2002 the photo`s were presented to Wangaratta R.S.L. Sub/Branch, and the shield went to Brisbane where it was beautifully restored by Wallace Richardson and his son-in-law Reg Townsend shortly before he passed away. The shield returned to Wangaratta in July 2003 and is now in the care of Wangaratta R.S.L. This wrought iron "ladder-frame" bookcase, which includes a drop-down table, is located in Suzy's bedroom. A second "ladder-frame" bookcase with desk is located in Penleigh's bedroom (item F085). They were both designed by Bruce Anderson - in the past they have been incorrectly attributed to Clement Meadmore. This type of furniture was featured in 'The Age' Small Homes Service and a similar one was featured in 'The Age' Dream Home Exhibition in 1955. From 1947 to 1953, Robin Boyd was the director of The Small Homes Service, set up by the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects in conjunction with 'The Age' and he produced a weekly article for 'The Age'.Wrought iron black frame with 10 ladder slots, and 3 cross brace frames, with 4 timber shelves. The four Maruni60 chairs are Japanese kit form self-assemble furniture (1961). Purchased from Anderson's furniture store in Chapel St Prahran, the store's back room was considered the coolest furniture showroom in Melbourne. Patricia Boyd had the cushions reupholstered to this purple fabric. These became quite fragile and broke several times and needed repair. The original chairs are currently stored offsite. These two chairs and another pair of chairs (item F044) are Grant Featherston prototypes of the 1947 Relaxation Chairs. These chairs came from the Boyd family's Camberwell home (666 Riversdale Road, Camberwell, formerly 158 Riversdale Road) and were originally upholstered with webbing. Display board was once property of Port Macquarie Historical Society & Museum, but they de-accessioned it in 2016 before donating it to the National Wool Museum. Reason for de-accession was that it no longer fit with their collection aims, nor was it relevant to their location. Item appears to have been made in 1963, or at least using wool samples from 1963. Photo depicts the interior of the Strachan, Murray & Shannon Limited wool store in Geelong after a record price was reached for the wool shown. This occurred on 24 November, 1920. This photograph was owned by the donor's father, Mr Cyril Cameron. Mr Cyril Cameron came from the family property 'Burnside' near Glenthompson in the Western District. He joined Strachan & Co. as an office boy in Aug. 1914 and then joined the 8th Battalion, 1st AIF in January 1915. He returned to Australia in early 1920 and started work at Strachan's again. He did the wool classing course (one year, evening?) at the Gordon in 1920-21. He became Head Wool Valuer at Strachan's in 1938 and retired in 1970. His office at Strachan's was on the top floor, directly overlooking what is now the entrance to the National Wool Museum (formerly Dennys Lascelles woolstore). He died in 1983. This photo was originally framed together with another similar photo (3122) and a document (3123) detailing the wool sale and prices under the title "Record Sale 24 November 1920". The two photos focus on lot 372, one looking to the north and the other to the west. The donors advised that it was purchased in England in 1934 by one of the parents (not advised) and then brought out to Australia when the immigrated. It was used by them in the eastern suburbs when the did not have electricity or gas. They later moved to the Dandenongs and again had to use it for cooking.Unit consists of a base with three large adjustable kerosene burners under a grid on which pots and pans were placed. At the right hand end is a round metal enclosure in which is enclosed a large glass bottle with a special top. Bottle is filled with kerosene (Royal Daylight Oil) and inverted. Kerosene then flows from container to burners. Flow is controlled by the adjustable needle jet for each burner.|OVEN is separate and has open frame of holes at bottom. It is placed over one of the burners. Heat of the oven is therefore controlled by adjusting the heat of the burner underneath.|There is a spare burner, trays etc and some spare parts in the oven. Hand operated washing machine - plunger type - a central cone plunger attached to a fulcrum point (adjustable in height) on side with a long arm. Depth of plunger action also adjustable. All mounted on a three leg frame. Container is slightly coned shaped at bottom and has a drain tap at bottom for emptying water. Container can also be lifted off. Provision made for attachment of a wringer (this could be a later modification). Plunger is approx 37cm in diameter and has four 1.5cm holes for water to be forced through.
