A thirty page history of Bendigo's Private Kenneth Young subsequently promoted to Lieutenant. Captured and interned in Crete, wounded 1st May 1942, was threatened with amputation, nursed to health by the Sisters of Mercy in a German hospital. Repatriated 1943, granted the authority to wear one gold wound stripe, subsequently employed in AMF Australian Inf at Murchison POW between which a broken fibula and tibia. Finally a stint as Guard of POW, accidentally shot in the leg by a German sentry when lying in bed. A unique service record from the horror of Crete. This fire truck was made by Rev. Friedrich Schoettler, a Missionary with Lutheran Mission at Ammele and Wanjma in New Guinea. He fled to Australia, from the Japanese, during WW2, being a German national. He was interned at Tatura, Victoria, where the internees made toys to sell for spending money. This truck was given to me, Don Kuhne, by my parents for Christmas about 1944. I am surprised that it lasted as long. My brothers used it. We towed it around the farm behind push bikes, etc. In the early 1960's I worked with Lutheran Mission New Guinea and had the pleasure of knowing Rev. Made by a German POW about 1944-45 and given to WO11 R. E. O'Hara. R. E. O'Hara, father of the donor, was a WO11 in the POW camp. He left Tatura at the end of the war when he was posted to Manus Island for the war crimes trials against the Japanese. He continued in the Army until 1952. WO11 R. E. O'Hara VX5293. The reproduction of the booklet was carried out on equipment in the office of the Camp Garrison, and copies of the booklet were made available to those internees within the camp and who were considered sympathetic to the German cause.The booklet tells the story of the internment of German Nationals in Australia from the German point of view. Hans Walter von Gruenewaldt was a German POW who used his artistic ability to paint several large mural caricatures while he was held at Camp 13 at Murchison. The technique he used was colourful house paint, painted directly onto the walls of the German mess hut, reading room and recreation hall in compound 13D. The paintings were completed over a duration of six years (1941-1946).
