Puffing Billy Preservation Society 50th Anniversary Station Sign, 2005
Puffing Billy Preservation Society 50th Anniversary sign This is the large poster board that was erected at Lakeside to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society in 2005. Established in 1955, the Puffing Billy Preservation Society was formed to operate the narrow gauge trains between Upper Fern Tree Gully and Belgrave following the successful Young Sun specials. With the conversion of the Upper Fern Tree Gully to Belgrave line to broad gauge track, the Puffing Billy Preservation Society was the instigator of restoring the Puffing Billy Railway from Belgrave to Menzies Creek in 1962, Menzies Creek to Emerald in 1965 and Emerald to Lakeside in 1975 and in association with the Emerald Tourist Railway Board, Lakeside to Gembrook in 1998. The Norman Oliver collection. Norman Oliver was three times Mayor of Bendigo - 1950-51, 1964-65, 1970-71. Three typed pages - a covering letter from City Hall dated 19th February 1964, to the Head teacher regarding the allocation of sports grounds for 1964, a weekly timetable for the use of each ground by a particular school, and a list of special allocations. The grounds allocated are : Queen Elizabeth Oval, Showgrounds, Kennington, Golden Square, Ewing Park, Wilkie Park, Centenary Oval, Garden Gully, Garden Gully (new Basketball courts), North Bendigo Recreation Reserve, Allingham St., Quarry Hill, White Hills, Long Gully, and Londonderry. Cornish Association Newsletter Volume 9, Number 2, June 2003 mentions the unveiling of the Long Gully Mining Monument on May 25th. The unveiling was carried out by John Bolitho Grand Bard of Cornwall in conjunction with Cr Darrel McClure. The ceremony was followed by afternoon tea supplied by the Long Gully History Group and organised by Carol Rasmussen of the Long Gully Community House. Some special guests were Gwen Phillips president of the C.A.V. and Vivian Pryor from Newquay Cornwall. The day was finished by Annual Dinner held at the Kangaroo Sports Club. Plans for other celebrations were underway. A paper, the Cornish in the First World War, was presented by Tom Luke at the Cornish association of South Australia's seminar. Canon Gully is situated about 2 km upstream from the railway bridge at Rupertswood. In 1864 it was the site for the military encampment of the Victorian Volunteer Forces. William Clarke allowed the military to stage the annual event on his property.
