The box was made by Albert Richardson from the first Blackwood Tree felled, dried and treated on the Brodribb River by him at the Tabbara Mill in 1882. Mrs Elma Camm (nee Freeman) was the wife of Herbert Desmond Camm. Des and Elma lived in Orbost from 1971-1980/1. Des died on 9/11/1980 and is buried in Orbost Cemetery. Elma moved away and is presently (2013) in care at Lakes Entrance. Elma's hobby was collecting shells and crafting them into interesting forms. Much of her work is in the Shell Museum in Lakes Entrance. The figurine in Orbost Museum was donated by Elma.This item is an example of the handcraft skills of women in the early to mid 20th century.A small figurine made completely of different shaped shells and set onto a wooden block as its base. The linen tablecloth has been hand worked using satin stitch embroidery and drawn thread work. This tablecloth is one of many 19th century items of furniture, linen and crockery donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by, Vera and Aurelin Giles. The items are associated with the Giles Family and are known as the “Giles Collection”. Most of the items in this Collection are in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage at Flagstaff Hill. The majority came from the simple home of Vera’s Giles’ parents, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton), whose photographs are in the parlour. They married in 1880. Henry Giles was born at Tower Hill, Victoria in 1858 and worked as a labourer on the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater. His wife, Mary Jane, was born in 1860 at Cooramook. She attended Mailor’s Flat State School, and later worked there as a student teacher, before (as family legend has it) she became a governess at “Injemira” where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, owned the land. The Giles family of six, some of whom were born at Mailor’s Flat and the younger at Purnim West, lived at “The Maam”, Wangoom before moving to New South Wales in 1895, where Henry built bridges for about 7 years. Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane died in 1940. The Giles family collection has social significance at a local level, because it illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill when the Museum was established.Tablecloth, white linen, part of the Giles Collection. These handmade baby clothes are a fine example of home crafts, showing attention to detail. The original owner and maker of these handmade silk baby clothes is unknown. They were previously owned by the mother of the donor. Her name was Mary Patricia (Pat) Mulready 21.4.1934 – 4.2.2007 who was born, died and died Warrnambool. This hand crafted set of runners is one of many 19th century items of furniture, linen and crockery donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by, Vera and Aurelin Giles. The items are associated with Warrnambool and the Giles Family history. Items donated by the family have come to be known as the “Giles Collection”. Many items in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage were donated by Vera and Aurelin Giles and mostly came from the home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton) who married in 1880 and whose photos are on display in the parlour. Henry was born at Tower Hill in 1858, and was a labourer on the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater before leaving in 1895 for around seven years to build bridges in NSW. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook and she attended Mailor’s Flat State School and where she eventually was to become a student teacher. Trudi Hogeman died in January 2017 and is buried at Marlo. Paper patterns have been used by seamstresses and home sewers throughout the 20th century and are still used today. The Simplicity Pattern Company was established in New York City in 1927 by James Shapiro and distributes patterns world-wide. Spotlight is the largest chain store in Australia selling fabrics, craft and interior decorator supplies at 100 stores throughout Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. It is currently situated in Warrnambool at 84 Raglan Parade. This dress pattern is of minor interest as coming from a local Warrnanmbool shop. It may be useful for display. This is a paper envelope containing the instructions and cut-out material for a child’s dress. The SS Casino was a coastal trader of 450 tons gross, 160.4 feet in length, built at Dundee for the Newcastle and Hunter Steam Navigation Company. It had saloon accommodation for 35 people, fore-cabin 25 and carried 300 tons (425 tonnes) of cargo.The Casino called at Warrnambool on 30th May 1882 while on her delivery voyage and narrowly escaped being dragged ashore by gale force winds. While the ship was in Warrnambool the directors of the Belfast and Koroit Steam Navigation Company bought the ship. It was used as a coastal steamer solely on the west coast of Victoria run from 1882. On the morning of 10th July 1932 an attempt was made to berth the ship at Apollo Bay in heavy seas. Captain Middleton decided to take the ship out into the bay and wait until the seas abated, not realising that the anchor used to steady the ship as she was being manoeuvred had pierced her hull. The ship was put about and headed to the beach, but sank. The captain and four crew members were swept off the deck, and though one crew member was rescued, four drowned. The beaded picture was made by Mary Wickham, the grandmother of the donor. This item has significance linking a piece of handcraft and a local ship from the late 19th century.It has significant artistic value. Hand worked embroidery of black, white, maroon, gold & clear glass beads on a background of white polished cotton. The embroidery is in a black painted wooden frame. Florence Ada Zull, known as Ada was an illustrator for the 'New Idea for Women" magazine. In 1961 she lived in Brunswick. From 1963 she and her husband Robert built a Alistair Knox designed house at Lot 8. Metery Road, Eltham "... Mum .. worked too during the week.. from the bungalow in Brunswick. The New Idea, a woman's magazine would send her the galley for the week's short story and she would illustrate an appropriate picture." - Sue Bennett (nee Zull), Eltham District Historical Society Newsletter, No 250 February 2020.
