Eltham Town Park was partially constructed on a tip site. The park and lake were landscaped in 1973-1974. SHIRE OF ELTHAM COMMUNITY PHOTOGRAPHIC SURVEY Photography is an artform which many of us practice, sometimes purely for artistic pursuit, sometimes to record the people and events in our lives. In 1988, as part of a local Bicentennial project, the Shire of Eltham conducted the Eltham Community Photographic Survey. Up to 100 entries were to be selected by a panel of photographers for entry into the Eltham Photographic Survey Exhibition. Entries had to be submitted by May 13, 1988. Entrants whose images were selected for the exhibition were contacted and requested to further submit an entry form providing entrant’s name, area of residence, age, and proposed captions. These details were then used to produce labels for the exhibition mounts. Where negatives had not been supplied, these were requested to support the display of printed enlargements mounted on 10” x 8” cardboard. The mounted prints were made available post exhibition for sale at $8.50 each for colour prints and $7.00 for B&W prints. Residents in the Shire were invited to collect a free roll of film and take a photograph of what they either liked or did not like about the area. A total of 160 entrants submitted multiple entries for the exhibition. Of those selected for exhibition, entrants ranged in age from 9 to 70 years. All custom colour and black and white printing for the exhibition was completed by Wattle Studios of Eltham. ESCAPE TO ELTHAM traces the family of John and Anna Lane who lived in Shanagolden in County Limerick during the early and middle parts of the 1800s. They lived during a time of conflict and famine. This story follows the movements of their son, Richard, and daughter, Anne, who migrated to Australia. The marriage of Anne to Tobias Butler and Richard's life establishing his farm on the Yarra River in the 1850s are explored. Marriage, children, deaths and a murder in 1861 are changes forced on the family. Richard's son, Patrick, marries a young Bridget Carrucan but when the global recession of the 1890s decimates Patrick's businesses he heads to the arid Western Australian goldfields to 'make his fortune'. The large family follows and settles in Boulder where the behaviour of a couple of the boys gets them into scapes with the law. Living Memorial is Trust's Gift To A Shire Bathed in bright sunshine and now at its best, the Memorial Garden of the Eltham War Memorial provided a perfect setting for the handing over of the Memorial to the people of Eltham last Saturday afternoon. Speaking for the War Memorial Trust, Mr E. P. Harmer, chairman paid tribute to the unselfishh service given by its members , some for more than 20 years. Special tribute was paid to the late Mrs Ada Lyon, a foundation member who, Mr Harmer said, made the Trust her life. A memorial plaque to Mrs Lyon was unveiled by foundation members Mr N. Kerr. Facilities. An infant welfare centre, a pre-school cente and a children's library are built within the memorial. Funds for the buildings were raised by the Trust and theh women's auxiliary. Accepting the Memorial on behalf of the people of the Shire, the Shire President, Cr. L. C. Docksey, assessed the value at beyond £50,000. To make the transaction legal, Cr. Docksey paid the sum of £1 to the Trust. Many foundation members of the Trust and councillors of the Shire were among the official guests. The Shire of Eltham Brass Band provided suitable background music for the ceremony and at. ADA LAURA LYON Ada Laura Apted was born in 1898 at Queenstown, Victoria the daughter of William Ernest Apted and Sarah Ann Watts On the 2 July 1923 she married David Andrew Lyon at Panton Hill Vic. The Lyon family are well known for the fleet of small buses they ran out of their Eltham Garage. In the interim years between becoming married and moving to Eltham (census records indicate they were there in 1931) they lived in several other suburbs including Doncaster and Ivanhoe At the conclusion of World War 2 the citizens of Eltham decided that a memorial should be made to those of the district who had given their lives during the war. Whilst there had been earlier discussions in 1943 by a body of Eltham Women under the title of "the Women's Auxiliary of the (proposed) Eltham War Memorial Trust'' the first official steps were made on the 27 March 1945 in a meeting by the citizens of Eltham under the title of the Eltham District Progress Association. At this meeting one of the first agenda was the appointment of a committee called "The Eltham War Memorial Trust''. Another was to decision that the Memorial should include: A Baby Health Centre, A Children's Library, And a Pre-School Centre From the inception of the project Mrs Ada Laura Lyon worked tirelessly as a member of the Women's Auxiliary to raise money for the memorial. At the election of the officers of the Trust Council in 1961 she was elected as one of the three Vice Presidents. On the 27 September 1962 Ada suddenly passed away. The news of her death was reported at the following Trust meeting. The President Mrs Morrison voiced the feelings of all present that Ada had done so much for the Trust since its inception and had received the satisfaction of seeing the completion of the three units of the War Memorial Trust which had been her goal. On Tuesday 31 August 1965 the Diamond Valley Mirror reported that on the 28 August 1965 the Eltham War Memorial was transferred from the Eltham Memorial Trust to the Shire of Eltham. A special tribute was paid to the late Mrs Ada Lyon a foundation member who made the Trust her life. A memorial plaque (the sundial) was unveiled in her memory. Ada Lyon was interned at Eltham Cemetery on the 28 September 1962. She was survived by her husband David (who passed away on the 25 November 1975) and their two children Betty and Ian.
