Betty Brown was a student of the Ballarat Technical Art School when she completed this work, most probably for the Wiltshire Poster Competition. In the 1936 Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report it was stated: "It is my pleasure to report a most successful year in the Technical Art School. I the Annual Poster Competition for Technical Schools, organised by Wiltshires Pty Limited, 16 prized valued at 33 pounds 8 shillings - out of 23 prizes valued at 56 pounds - were won by our students. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The board was probably from the School of Mines Library, located on the 1st floor of the Administration Building in Lydiard Street. Changes have been made to some times for Tuesday and Friday. Newspaper cutting from The Courier, Ballarat, Saturday 20/6/1998 in the 'In Retrospect' section of the newspaper, of the report 75 years ago of the derailment of a tram car, fully loaded at intersection of Sturt and Lydiard Streets. The Ballarat Camp housed the Goldfields administrators. It was from this site that the troopers left on the morning of 3 December 1854 to attack the Eureka Stockade. This microscope is thought to be associated with Chemist Erskine Llewellyn of Ballarat. Erskine E. Llewellyn studied Chemistry at the Ballarat School of Mines in 1885. It may also be associated with Palmer's Chemist in Lydiard Street Ballarat. "OBITUARY. - The many friends here and in the surrounding districts will regret to learn of the tragically sudden death of Mr Erskine Llewellyn, who for many years was associated with the firm of A. M. Palmer and Co., chemists, of Lydiard street. For some considerable time Mr Llewellyn had been associated with the U.F.S. Dispensary at North Carlton, and there, as in the case here, by his courtesy and attention to business, he made a host of friends, and his sudden demise will be deplored."
