'Wimba' is of significance as one of the key nineteenth century houses of Kew and for remaining in a substantially intact state. Although probably built some time earlier, the first mention in the Rate Books of the property later known as 'Wimba Lodge' appears in the entry for 1870 when the property, owned by John Sharpe Denbigh, a civil servant, was given an N.A.V. of £72 2. Denbigh did however occupy a house in Cotham Road in 1863, and it is possible that was the same premises'. The house was occupied by Denbigh until at least May 1876 when the 'family residence...' \ 'as auctioned to Carlington George Edmund Marston 5, a chemist of Smith Street, Collingwood. At the time of the auction the house was described thus: The residence and grounds of the late J.S. Dendigh, situate in the most elevated part of Cotham Road Kew. The grounds comprise an area of 4a Or29p or thereabouts, and have a frontage to Cotham-road of 4 chains. The house has two large rooms in front, with 6ft hall built of brick, bay and side windows (plate glass), four rooms of wood behind with slate roofs, bathroom and closets, detached kitchen and servant's room, large shed with washing boiler, pantry and cellar under, brick and cement tank, and the Yan Yean laid onto house and grounds, cowshed, pigstye, &c, the whole securely fenced. First class orchard and flower garden. The paddocks laid with English grasses and drained... .' Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.The front entrance of Wimba in Cotham Road, Kew. The entrance is flanked by two polygonal bay windows, and a verandah with a concave corrugated iron roof returns around three facades, and accentuates the projections of the windows. The solid render parapet is very ornate and tall for the date of construction. It has panels of decoration along it and is surmounted by a number of render urns. Enlistment papers signed by his parents stated that he was not to embark for overseas until he turned 19 years. Embarked 16.7.1917. While in France he passed Lewis Gunnery School. Black and white photograph of W2 399 eastbound in Victoria Parade with the destination of Deepdene. The tram was fitted with route number boxes in 4/1930. The Victoria Parade line was opened to electric trams on 15/9/1929, dating the photo c1930. The photos shows established hedgerows that were planted along the tram track. The tram is at the Lansdowne St stop which has a tram stop shelter. Note the ornate scroll work on the centre poles. The frame was hand carved by Cecil Rice and given to his aunt Mrs Marion Gargan. Cecil Rice ( 1912 - 1985) was the son of Walter Cecil Rice and Ellen Theresa Gargan.This item is a pictorial record of a 1920s wedding. Wedding dresses are a useful way to chart changing fashions. The Percy Uebergang family lived at Tooram Park, Allansford from 1912 until 1992. Percy and Myrtle Uebergang's children were twins, Ray and Joyce born in 1926 who lived at Tooram Park until their deaths, Ray in 1986 and Joyce in 1992. Neither Ray nor Joyce married and following the death of her brother Joyce set up the Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation which supports the local community. This bookis part of the collection of items given into the care of the Cheese World Museum. Stick mercury barometer, named after Admiral Robert Fitzroy of the Royal Navy (1805 - 1865) for his detailed instructions on interpreting the weather that are included with the instrument. Fitzroy was the captain of the Beagle, a weather forecaster to Charles Darwin and the second Governor of New Zealand. He developed many different types of barometers and was the first person to introduce the science of weather forecasting to the British Isles. A local manufacturer of scientific instruments, Thomas Gaunt, produced the barometer and it was adapted for the southern hemisphere by Robert Ellery, the State Astronomer based at the Melbourne Observatory. Described as "Gaunt's Fitzroy Barometers" in the original sale catalogue, it was priced from 25/- to ₤9.9s. [See Miller, M., Gaunt’s Time, 2014]. Thomas Gaunt's business was originally located at 14 Bourke Street East from 1858. In 1869-1870 he moved to new premises in the Royal Arcade, Collins Street. Gaunt's business became an institution in Victorian Melbourne and Gaunt its leading clock maker. PROVENANCE According to official minutes the barometer was purchased by the Melbourne Athenaeum in 1874. In particular, at the March meeting of the General Committee the House Subcommittee was instructed to "obtain a Fitzroy or other reliable barometer" to be "fixed in the Reading Room". The 1874 Annual Report records the purchase at ₤3.10.0. The barometer is historically significant as an example of the work of Melbourne’s leading scientific instrument maker, Thomas Gaunt. The barometer has social significance as an example of the type of accoutrements provided by the committee of the Melbourne Athenaeum for the comfort of its members. Further social significance lies in the fact that Robert Ellery, the Government Astronomer, who designed the local version of the barometer, has a direct connection with the Athenaeum being a subscription member and committee member of the Athenaeum during the 1870s. There are also records of a T Gaunt as a subscription member of the Athenaeum during the 1870s and 1880s which may be Thomas Gaunt, however, this is yet to be verified. It comprises an oblong wooden case with glass front panel, ornate pediment, barometer with bulb cistern (empty of fluid),printed instructions for interpreting information given by the gauge affixed to left and right face of instrument. Includes a thermometer. The barometer appears to be intact except for the turning knobs which are missing and the mercury in the tube which is not present. Whether the instrument could be restored to working order is unknown. The Tibetan astrological calendar is a lunisolar calendar composed of either 12 or 13 lunar months, each beginning and ending with a new moon. A thirteenth month is added every two or three years, so that an average Tibetan year is equal to the solar year. The Tibetan astrological calendar has roots in the Indian calendar system and has been in use for over a thousand years.The Tibetan calendar is an important tool for determining auspicious dates and times and for making predictions about future events. The calendar is an essential aspect of Tibetan identity and culture and continues to be used and revered to this day. This ornate copper disk represents the traditional Tibetan astrological calendar (called Phukpa) based on a 60-year cycle where each year is associated with an animal and an element. The central figure is surrounded by eight trigrams (known as Parkhas), featuring one of the four seasons and four cardinal directions. The original owner was Louis Kolling.An antique thick rectangular photograph album made of dark tan leather with an elaborate embossed floral and leaf design on the front and back covers. The brass clasp on the side is in working order but is broken. It contains 24 thick double sided cardboard pages which have sepia family photographs inserted. There are several missing photographs. Each picture has the name of the photographic studio printed at the bottom of it. Some photos have names written beneath them in blue writing. Each page has beautiful hand painted coloured flowers and leaves decorating them. At the front is a highly coloured decorative floral title page with the word - Album. On the back of this page is a blank Index with 100 spaces to write the names of those in the photographs. The whole album as quite worn and damaged with several inscriptions.'On the front right side endpaper is handwritten on the textured page in blue ink 'Mrs Kelling, a present from Mrs Bond'. Painted ornately in colourful paints is 'Martha Bond' There is a strip of paper included on this page handwritten in blue biro 'Donated posthumously by Louis Kolling, a first cousin and neighbour of Edmund L. Burgi'.
