As this photo relates to pre WW1 taken at the Bendigo Race Course it will relate to Fredericks brother, Herbert Spencer Hutson No 3540 57th Bn. Herbert had pre war service in the 67th Militia Bn in Bendigo. Herb enlisted also in the 8th Reo’s 21st Bn and also transferred to the 57th Bn same day as his brother. Pre World War I Militia Unit. Taken at Bendigo Race Course stand. Black and white portrait of irregularly dressed soldier and one white dog. They are both seated and standing. Various head dress. Their rifles are Martini - Henry single shot. There appears to be a Chaplain in the group. Group size approx. 100 soldiers. In the grand stand behind them are various pieces of kit. They are probably Bendigo's 67 Infantry in front of the Bendigo Race Course stand. Herbert enlisted in the AIF on 26.6.1917 age 18 years in the 25th Reinforcements 14th Bn No 7596, embarked for England 21.11.1917, disembark 5.1.1918, attends 4th Div Signal School, embarks for France 29.7.1918 to reinforce 13th Bn, RTA 1.11.1919, discharged from the AIF 14.1.1920. He enlists in the CMF on 3.5.1939 No V1629, appointed Lt 3.12.1937, transfers to the 2nd AIF 10.9.1942 as VX104280, joins the Interim Army 1.7.1947 till 7.6.1948, appointment terminated with the rank of Lt Col. It includes advertisments for businesses in Cairo and Alexandria; Egypt, Palestine and Syria. Page 2 includes a poem titled "This Holy Night" by Pte C.M. Arthur Woodley who donated the photographs, was a friend of Jimmy Clarke, who was Captain of the Killarra Ferry and lived at Narabeen Guesthouse in Cowes, Phillip Island. Several items were given by a seafarer, Mr Nicholas Garlick (1926-2009) into the care of Father Brady who retired from St Pauls Cathedral, Melbourne in 2018. Father Brady later donated the collection of; objects, documents and an extensive collection of cruise ship menus (1937-end of 20thC) to the Mission via the intermediary William Hastie, volunteer at the Mission for Seafarers.Possibly a pamphlet printed for VIP guests and families attending the ceremony.Two page Anzac Day memorial service pamphlet/leaflet. Smooth/shiny paper, two ink colours (magenta and bluish green), picture of slouch hat at top right corner, and the insignia of each Australian armed force (navy, army, airforce) along the bottom of the pamphlet. The order of ceremony is printed in red ink on the two inner pages. The Maréchal de Turenne, a three mast barque, was built in the "Chantiers de la Loire" shipyard in Nantes, port in the West of France, in 1899 by the company René Guillon et René Fleury. Capacity of 3000 barrels. The barque is called a "cap-hornier" in French. In a book written in 1973 by Georges Aubin, "La mer douce et cruelle", ed. France-Empire, a chapter "Une traversée du trois-mâts nantais Maréchal de Turenne" (page 285 to 319) tells how the ship was navigating from London to New-York to load barrels of petrol bound for Melbourne.The photograph demonstrates how prepared the merchant navy was during the First World War. The French Merchant Navy had additional men from the Navy: the six sailors in uniform and sailor "bachi" bonnet with the AMBC inscription were on the ship to support the crew in case of enemy attack. Two of those soldiers carry a bayonet. One of the sailors is wearing headphones: World War One saw telecommunication progress. At sea, the threat were the German submarines: the U-boats.The photograph depicting the 22 members of the crew was taken in October 1918 onboard the Marechal de Turenne. The two on the right and left side are holding a picture of the barque. One man at the back is holding a cat. 11 names are written at the back. WW2 standard army issue kitbag.Name and serial number of soldier stenciled on bag. Details of service available on Australian WW2 Memorial Roll. Donated by a family member who was a Montmorency/Eltham sub-branch member.The kitbag consists of a long, brown, canvas cylinder closed at the bottom. The top has an internal canvas flap and eight brass grommets to allow a drawstring type rope to securely close the bag. A metal D-shaped hinged clasp to enable fitting of a padlock (end of straight section of D has been broken off - see photo). The name and army serial number of the owner are stencilled in white paint on the side of the bag. Along side of bag: D.F.
