The Municipality of Kew (1860-1863), the Borough of Kew (1863-1910), the Town of Kew (1910-1921) and the City of Kew (1921-1994) were local government instrumentalities in the State of Victoria. In 1994, the City of Kew was amalgamated, together with the former Cities of Camberwell and Hawthorn, into the new City of Boroondara (1994- ). Like other local government entities of the period, Kew was administered by town clerks. The two notable town clerks in Kew's history were H. H. (Henry Hirst) Harrison (1868-1955) and W. D. (William Dickie) Birrell (1899-1974). Harrison was appointed to the position in 1901 and retired in 1938 after 37 years. Birrell, appointed Acting Town Clerk in 1921, became Town Clerk in 1938, following Harrison's retirement. He continued in this role until his retirement in 1966.This card is part of an historically significant civic collection, containing hundreds of separate invitations, documents, greeting cards, programmes and tickets issued and/or collected by successive town clerks. The Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as the mounted arm of the Victorian Colonial defence force in 1885. It was under the command of Colonel Thomas Caradoc Rose (Tom) Price (1842-1911). Price was born in Tasmania, educated in Hobart Town and at Scotch College, Melbourne, before entering the East India Military College, Addiscombe, England. He was commissioned on 7 July 1861 in the Madras Infantry and began twenty years’ service in India with several regiments, retiring in April 1883. On his return to Victoria he was tasked with raising of a force of one thousand, to be known as the Victorian Mounted Rifles, and appointed a lieutenant-colonel in the Permanent Military Forces. Companies of the Victorian Mounted Rifles were raised in rural districts throughout Victoria. The soldiers were paid a small annual allowance and were required to provide their own horse. Many members served in contingent to the Boer War. After Federation the VMR was gathered up into the Australian Light Horse. This small program was produced for a Massed Bands event held at Elsternwick Park on the 14th of September, 1952 involving brass bands from all over Metropolitan Melbourne and one band from Geelong. Held under the patronage of the Victorian Bands' League, this event involved bands marching from Elsternwick Station to the oval, and then performing a selection of items either on the march or in massed band format. The event was adjudicated by Mr George Harris with trophies awarded to various brass bands. The Massed Bands event was held to raise funds for the Caulfield Citizens' Band who had recently lost their band room due to fire.This little program is of significance as it highlights a typical brass band event in Metropolitan Melbourne. These programs are rare and it indicates the popularity of them and the range of bands that would travel long distances to participate. In a dual purpose, this event also raised money for the local band and was obviously a highlight for the municipality. A programme for the Legacy Centenary Commemoration Ceremony held at the Shrine of Remembrance at the end of the Torch Relay donated by Legatee David Kelly. The service was attended by His Excellency, General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) and his wife, her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley. Legacy was founded in Melbourne in 1923, so Melbourne hosted the final leg of the Torch Relay that began in Pozieres, France in April 2023. On Friday 13th October the Torch Relay concluded at the Shrine of Remembrance with the Torch flame returned to the eternal flame at the Shrine. Legatee Kelly was selected to be the last Legacy torchbearer, he lead representatives from Legacy Clubs attending The 2023 National Conference up the Forecourt where the flame passed to the wife of the Governor General Mrs Linda Hurley. This is a programme for a Service of Intercession in Relation to the War. It was held by the Methodist Church (Victoria and Tasmania Conference) in October 1915. The Wesleyan Methodist Conference at Birmingham, England requested that Sunday October 31st 1915 be set aside as a Day of Thanksgiving and Intercession throughout Britain and all other countries in the British Empire. The service was held to seek Divine intercession and aid for those on active military service in World War One and for the families of these men and women. This programme is of interest as the 1915 service would have been held in Methodist Churches throughout Victoria and Tasmania and this would have included the Warrnambool Methodist Church. World War One was a highly significant event in the history of Australia and Warrnambool, along with all other places in Australia, was affected deeply by the war with many young local people enlisting and many dying on active service.These are two sheets of paper folded in two to make eight pages. The pages contain a programme for the Methodist Church service in October 1915. The printing is in blue on a whitish/bluish background. The front cover is edged with blue lines.
