Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Card - Invitation card, The Victoria Missions to Seamen, 1906
The original date for the laying of Foundation stone for the first Mission building at Australian Wharf in 1906 had to be changed to the 5th of February 1907 due to industrial action at the Wharves. See scrapbooks and clippings for details. Lord Northcote the Governor General officiated. Ephemera - Leighton Collection: Theatrical Scrapbook
Herbert A Leighton was an actor and Elocution teacher, known widely in the Eastern states of Australia where he performed with his wife Tracy Hamilton. However all was not as it seemed. In 1903 he was arrested in Perth after suspicions were raised when he purchased expensive jewellery and clothes for his wife. Subsequently six thousand pounds in banknotes was found under his bed. Another fellow from his theatre group was also arrested and charged with bank robbery. Leighton was charged with receiving money knowing it was stolen. Investigations by the Perth police showed that Leighton was really Norman Campbell who had been born in Gippsland. He had worked as a clerk in the Victorian Savings Bank in Melbourne and then in the same role in the Sydney Savings Bank. During this time he had amassed large sums of money by forgery, a crime he spent seven years in prison for. He then emerged as the newly minted H. A. Leighton, actor and elocution teacher in Bendigo. .Large format scrapbook collated by D H Leighton. Contains photographs, flyers, programs, invitations, newspaper clippings, posters, promotional photos of performers between 1901 and 1936. The article featured in the Port Gazette seems to be a profile of James and his works and headline being: "Jack's Friend" Rev Ebenezer James one of the early Chaplains based at the Mission to Seafarers. He ministered to and advocated on behalf of the seagoing fraternity both merchant and Naval forces and was an instrumental force in the stamping out of the practice of crimping and the exploitation of seafarers. He received and forwarded the letter from 22 sea captains (MTSV 0030 requesting the establishment of a Mission in the vicinity of the Australian Wharf. Badge, The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, 1917-1930
The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild originally inspired by the Central Mission in England was established in Melbourne in 1906. The first secretary Miss Ethel Godfrey is known to have addressed and helped establish LHLG groups in Brisbane and Sydney circa 1918 to 1920 (see clipping MTS scrapbook 1906-1935). This badge therefore represents a link with LHLG groups elsewhere in Australia. The LHLG groups were vital in raising funds and maintaining facilities around Australia for seafarers.
