Born in Ireland in 1838, Annie Ross married Samuel Lewers at Creswick in 1856. Samuel Lewers, a gold buyer and bank agent, became manager of the Bank of New South Wales in Linton in about 1860, and was afterwards the first Shire of Grenville President and a Justice of the Peace. Annie and Samuel Lewers had eleven children. They lived in the residence at the Bank of NSW building in Sussex Street (this building now known as Traquair House). Around the time Samuel Lewers retired in 1895 they leased and moved to Emu Hill, the property formerly owned by the Linton family, at that time owned by Edward Morey. Samuel Lewers died shortly after his retirement, in 1895. Annie Lewers died at Emu Hill in 1904.Black & white copy of original photograph, showing Annie Lewers as a comparatively young woman. The portrait was commissioned in 1884, near the end of Stawell's term of office. The portrait was commissioned at the same time as those of Redmond Barry and Justice Molesworth. The total cost of all three paintings was 1200 pounds. Sir William Stawell arrived in Victoria in 1842; he quickly established a reputation for himself at the Bar. After the separation of the Port Phillip colony from New South Wales, Sir William served as the attorney general in the first representative government and was the leading prosecutor in the Eureka trials. Sir William was appointed as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1857, serving 29 years in the post. In addition the township of Stawell was named after the recently appointed Chief Justice in 1858. The portrait is of historical significance as a portrait of Sir William Stawell.Full length portrait in oils of Sir William Stawell. Stawell is seated and dressed in his judicial robes. This picture frame was hung in the Bridge Hotel in the upstairs display that was assembled in the 1970s and can be seen in some of the photographs taken upstairs over the decades in the Port Collection. Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918.
