The history starts in 1851 when gold was discovered along the Bendigo Creek to 1992 when Bendigo Mining NL purchased the licences and infrastructure from WMC. Colour photo: image shows grave stone of John Ward. John Ward, eldest son of John and Ellen Ward of Ankerbold near Chesterfield, England. Died 17/5/1883 on a visit to Sandhurst for the benefit of his health in the 31st. Year of his age. Enclosed with photo is Bendigo Advertiser article written by John Ward thanking the citizens of Sandhurst for their assistance rendered to his son. Buried in Bendigo cemetery : MON D1 Grave Number: 8752. Colour photo of the headstone for John Ward, who passed away on 17 may 1883. The inscription reads 'In Loving Memory Remembrance of John Ward, eldest son of John & Ellen Ward, of Ankerbold Mear Chesterfield England, who departed this life the 17th day of May 1883, while on a visit to Sandhurst for the benefit of his health in the thrity first year of his age.
