The Decanter set was originally given to Dr John Paull by Dr Geoffrey Kaye and were later donated to the College by Paull . The decanter label, coaster and tray were crafted by Geoffrey Kaye and includes his initials inscribed into each piece. "LEY" Pewter refers to the pewter containing a large percentage of lead which in this case there is 80% tin and 20% lead.Glass decanter of cylindrical form with glass stopper and a pewter label which hangs over the decanter. Nina Steane was the daughter of Sydney Carroll. He was the son of John Whiteman and Alice Cornwall, born in Melbourne in 1877. After a short marriage his parents separated and he chose to live with his father. Alice resumed her maiden name and became successful in the Mining Industry in Ballarat. She owned the Midas Mine on the Dowling Forest Estate, Victoria. She was known as Madame Midas. Returning to London her business thrived and her company the 'British Australasian Mining Investment Company' was floated in London in July 1889. It is said she became a millionaire at 30. Sydney Carroll was born George Frederick Carl Whiteman (1877-1958). Sydney was heavily involved with the theatre and was manager of a number of London theatres. He founded the Open Air Theatre in 1933. A new complex was been built on the site in 1975. He was part-author of several plays, published a book on dramatic criticism as well as being a drama critic. Nina Steane (Carroll) was born in 1932 and studied Art at the Cheltenham School of Art. She then went to Oxford University where she studied Literature. After Oxford she married John M Steane and they had three children. They lived in Southport, Kettering where she exhibited her art until the mid 1970s. In 1976 John became Oxfordshire's County Archaeologist and so moved to live in the area. Here Nina showed her art as well as in London and other parts of the country as well as abroad Nina died in 1990, aged 57. .1 Type written letter on white paper. Fob (or pocket) watches were developed in Europe in the 16th century and gained wide usage during the mid 18th century until World War 1 when the wristwatch was invented. These watches were designed to be carried in a small pocket and attached through the means of a 'fob' which could be a chain or made from a variety of materials such as leather. Their popularity peaked in the nineteenth century where they were an important part of middle and lower class society as well.This item is of social significance as fob / pocket watches were valued as an essential object in all levels of society in the late 19th century. For some occupations, such as the railroads, it was a necessary tool of the job. Being dated to the early 1900s gives the watch historical significance as possibly being used during the first World War.Pocket watch with possible gunmetal case and brass winder. The white dial has black Roman numerals on the face (note the use of four lines for the number 4 and no markings for the number 6). The face has a circular insert and hand to show the seconds. All hands are gold coloured with the hour hand having a leaf shape. The case has a back cover, which opens to reveal an inner cover, which protects the workings. Both covers are inscribed with the number 877396. The back cover has the words ACIER GARANTI stamped into it, which means steel guaranteed and may refer to the screws used in the workings.Stamped inside the back cover in an oval shape - ACIER GARANTI with N.F. stamped in between the words. The number 877396 is stamped inside the back cover and again inside the middle cover. There is an indecipherable marking near the number inside the back cover and another scratching on the inside of the back cover which may be letters or numbers. The workings are inscribed with the words SWISS MADE and the manufacturer's circular stamp 'MOERIS'. Single cylinder horizontal petrol engine mounted on a 4 wheeled trolley. Two flywheels, one either side, no pulley. Galvanised cylindrical fuel tank mounted on a wooden box in front. Box contains a battery and ignition coil. Trolley has cast iron wheels and is designed for pulling by hand. Painted red and grey. Probably a power source for farm machinery. On a brass plate fixed to the cylinder. Rectangular olive green metal case. Stored within the case is a round olive green metal lamp. The lamp is attached to the metal case by a two wire copper flex cord. Stored within the case are 3 short metal rods with a spiral thread on one end which screw together to form a stand for the lamp. The interior of the case is divided into 2 sections and is accessed via 2 lids which are hinged on the internal divide, one lid is larger than the other. Mounted to the inside of the larger lid is a Morse key pad. Attached to case is a canvas webbing strap with brass buckles.Mounted on the larger of the lids, is a rectangular brass identification plate with the inscription " LAMP SIGNALLING DAYLIGHT SHORT RANGE CASE MK II, PMG MELB 1942 " and stamped 1176 5. Mounted on the lamp is is an oval brass identification plate with the inscription "LAMP SIGNALLING DAYLIGHT SHORT RANG PROJECTOR MK 11 STROMBERG CARLSON 1942" with stamped serial number 26634. D (up arrow) D is marked on one side of the case.
