A large lamp used used to light a room by showing light from above. Used in the Orbost district late 19th to early 20th century prior to electricity connection. Generally, lamps like this had a matching decorations on the shade and vase. It would have been almost impossible to find an exact match if the shade was broken so the next best thing was to replace it with a plain white one. The majority of the removable slip fonts were made to the same dimensions so it was not uncommon for an original font to be replaced with a different brand if it became unusable. This is an example of a domestic lighting device in use before the widespread connection of electricity to houses in Orbost.A large lamp which hangs from a bracket. It has a large white glass cover above the wick burner and below is a white bowl decorated with flowers. The hanging lamp is American and, from the design and pattern of the brass work, it was made by Edward Miller & Co. Both the shade and vase (font holder) are glass. Spirits came in bottles sold at licensed premises either locally or in larger cities visited during shopping expeditions. The shape, embossing and size of bottles varied. Small bottles of whisky or gin were used as a comforting drink for the sick. On 1 side the glass is clear and shaped as a rectangle joined to a circle sitting on top of the rectangle. The opening is heavily embossed for a screw top. The sides are straight for three quarters of the way up then sharply taper to the neck before the lip and opening. Embossed on the base. The shape of the bottle is rectangular with curved ends. The tower features a tall spire with two large faceted balls and three smaller balls fixed to a glass base. Chinese writing around the edge of base. Under the base is round mirror which creates a multicoloured effect through the base of the tower.

After Brooks, Robinson & Co. closed its stained glass department in the 1960s, Stansfield, who was the senior artist and head of the department, set up in business with the foreman of the leadlight department, Jim Lynch. The Little Black Cormorant is mainly found in freshwater wetlands in Australia and Tasmania. It nests colonially and can sometimes be seen among Heron or Ibis colonies. This specimen has dark webbed feet which enable the bird to catch its prey underwater by diving and using the feet for propulsion. Interestingly, this species have nictitating membranes which cover the eyes underwater protecting them. The feathers of this species are not waterproof despite being commonly located in wetlands and therefore, can often be seen perched with wings outstretched in an effort to dry them after hunting for food in the water. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century.This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century.This Little Black Cormorant is a slim and small specimen of entirely black colouring with some lighter specks on the back. The bill is grey and is slender and hooked at the tip. The bird has been stylized with glass eyes and is placed on a wooden mount designed to look like a perch. The neck is long and the bird is looking over its right wing. The company was established in 1859 by Alfred Charles Cossor following a period of apprenticeship by the founder as a glass blower, Having gained a high reputation for his skills and the quality of his products, the founder was joined by his sons Alfred Charles in 1875 and then by his younger son Frank in 1885. In 1904 Accoson produced their first glass manometer, using their glass blowing skills, known as the sphygmomanometer. A year later Russian surgeon Nikolai Korotkoff first described the technique to measure diastolic pressure. In 1921 Frank Cossor was joined by his son Frank Gordon Cossor and the company expanded its products to include all types of thermometers, hydrometers and syringes. However, Sphygmomanometers became the main product of the company. When Adrian Cossor joined the company in 1966 he was the fourth generation to do so. Accoson was acquired by the HCE Medical Group in 2018 and relocated to new premises in Irvine, Scotland. The postcard depicts a large grandstand with spectators attending a race meeting in Baarmutha Park, Beechworth. The crowd is made up of many young men, women and children. There is one horse with a jockey captured in movement. The postcard is historically significant as it illustrates how Barrmutha Park was used at this time. The record's historical significance is enhanced by its strong relationship to the popular, continuing tradition of horse racing within Victoria (vis-a-vis Melbourne Cup, W.S. Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup).
