This book was carried in France and possibly Gallipoli by Sig. H. C. Roussac and the insert "d/0291" was of a Chaplain who obviously had a profound affect on the ownerDemonstrates the religious convictions of some soldiers in WWIBlack leather bound bible with the first page removed by a clean cut. The bible the name of Signaller H. C. Roussac. 25th Battalion A.I.F. and the date Sept 11th 1917. There is a further inscription "Carried through Action "Battle of Ypres" Sept 20th 26th Oct 4th, 9th and 12th consecutively- Wounded Oct. 12th 17- signed H. C. Roussac. There is also what may be an autograph Pt. ? Frogg Masfr??? The bible also contained a lithograph, probably cut from a paper of Chaplain-Captain F. H. This book was awarded by Geelong Grammar to Walter Armstrong in 1884. It was donated to the Ballarat College library by his grandson W Mick U Armstrong (1944). Mick attended Ballarat College 1937 - 1942. In 1936 the Weatherly Library was established at Ballarat College and a community book drive resulted in personal copies of books owned by members of the school community being donated to the library over the next 10-20 years. Mick Armstrong donated this book (amongst others) to the school library during his final year at the school. It is an excellent example of the community spirit which carried the school through periods of financial hardship. Dark royal blue leather bound book with gold crest, borders and spine detail. In 1861, August Dhmel of Slatey Creek near Ballarat, applied to be naturalized. He was born in Prussia and arrived by ship from Hamburg in 1849. He was thirty years old and was wishing to purchase land intending to settle for the rest of his life in the Colony of Victoria. This would be granted after taking the Oath before one of the Judges of the Supreme Court. This was taken before Sir Redmond Barry, Knight, in April 1861. In 1860, Charles Herold of Ballarat, a gold miner applied to be naturalized. He was born in Kitzinger Bavaria and at the age of thirty-five arrived by the ship "Mary Ross" in Tasmania in 1854 from Hamburg. He then came to the Colony of Victoria by the SS "Queen" in 1857. He wished to purchase land and settle in the Colony for life. This was granted but he first needed to swear an Oath before one of the Judges of the Supreme Court. The Certificate was signed by Henry Barkly. Charles Herold took the Oath before Robert Molesworth, Judge of the Supreme Court on 18 July 1860.Thick cream paper, hand written in ink.
