Pamphlet - Frank A. Hill and Co. 100 years, 1953
L. McPherson Sternberg and Co. was a large public company set up in Bendigo in the year 1853 especially to cater for the New South Wales consignments of cattle and horses which came regularly to Bendigo in those days to feed the thousands of hungry miners who had congregated from the four comcri:; of the earth in search of gold. The cattle were sold in the Municipal Cattle Yards ,and the horses in the Bazaar at Charing Cross. The founders of the business must have had tremendous faith in the future of Bendigo to have built such a large and solid structure as the Bazaar, including ample space for the administrative offices which, though reconstructed, are still basically as they were in the far-off fifties. When L. McPherson Sternberg & Co. retired from business in or about the year 1892, the business was acquired by Mr. Frank A. Hill. Frank A. Hill and Co. - a 14 page pamphlet outlining the history of the company and its 100 year development. Black and white, contains texts and photos.history, bendigo, frank a hill and co -

... shafts yielded quartz rich with gold, inspired other miners... shafts yielded quartz rich with gold, inspired other miners ...Gold was discovered on Victoria Hill in 1854 and by 1861, 1,200,000 ounces of gold had been extracted from the site. The first claim was bought for 80 pounds by Prussian immigrant Christopher Ballerstedt and his son Theodore. Christopher Ballerstedt was nicknamed the "Father of the Hill" and was the first to prove that gold reefs extended below the surface. His 200-foot plus mine shafts yielded quartz rich with gold, inspired other miners, and were instrumental in Bendigo becoming the world's deepest and richest goldfield. The site still features relics of nineteenth century mining including quartz crushing machinery and the foundations of George Lansell’s 180 mine. These features are characteristic of Bendigo’s mining history and represent two prominent nineteenth century miners, Christopher Ballerstedt and George Lansell, who held important roles in the development of Bendigo. Victoria Hill Quartz Gold Mines are registered as a site of significance. The site is of historical, archaeological and scientific importance to Victoria. The mines represent the symbolic heart of Bendigo’s gold mining history and the importance that mining played in wealth creation and the development of Victoria. The diggings reserve is accessed from the rear of Albert Richardson Reserve located at 40-56 Marong Road, Ironbark. The site has steep and unformed paths and is closed to the public at dusk. It is important to stay to the paths to avoid the diggings. Interpretive signs help visitors to appreciate the importance of the site and the remaining relics of Bendigo’s mining history.Victoria Hill Ironbark, Bendigo. Legal record - WES HARRY COLLECTION: THREE MINER'S RIGHT / RESIDENCY PERMITS
... Miner’s Right, in addition to the right to prospect for gold, also... colonies. Unlike the Gold License, the early Miner’s Right ...The Miner’s Right has a long history in Australia. Still in use today, it was first established in Victoria in 1855, as a replacement for the Gold License (which had been introduced in Victoria in 1851). The Miner’s Right was subsequently adopted by other Australian colonies. Unlike the Gold License, the early Miner’s Right, in addition to the right to prospect for gold, also carried with it certain other advantages, such as property rights and voting rights. The Miner’s Right came about as a recommendation of a government-appointed commission, which had been appointed on 1854 to look into the troubles on the Victorian goldfields, especially regarding the Eureka Rebellion.Three Miner's Rights / Residency Permits for leases on the corner of Holdsworth Road and Wood Street, Long Gully, Bendigo (Area known as American Gully - downstream of the American Mine): a and b No 72 Sarah Harvey, dated 23/01/1913 c and d No 23148 Evalina Gifford Vivian Harvey, dated 14/09/1926 e and f No 23149 Thomas George Harvey, dated 14/09/1926 Issued by the Victorian Government at a cost of two shillings and six penceVictorian State Governmentwes harry collection, miner's right, bendigo, history, long gully bendigo -
