Puffing Billy Railway
Vehicle - Traction Engine - Foden Compound, 1914
Ordered by Langwill Bros., & Davies Ltd Melbourne Used for saw milling, dam constructions and log haulingFoden Traction Engine This engine is a compound traction engine built by Foden Ltd of Sandbach England in 1914 – builders number 4525. This was ordered by Langwill Bros and Davies Ltd of Melbourne and was used by Mr F Orr on his farm at Bullarto South Victoria. On the farm it was used for many agricultural purposes and was used at times as a stationary engine to run a wooden thrashing machine. The unit was last used on the farm in 1947 and put aside on the farm with a “museum” of other old agricultural tractors and machinery. Mr Orr gave us the engine as an exhibit for the Menzies Creek Museum of Puffing Billy in the 1960s. At that stage he was an elderly gentleman of 97 years and maintained a great interest in his farm which had been in his family’s hands for three generations at that stage. His grandfather had cut the farm from the bush. The traction engine in its youth was used to go around other farms in the district and went as far away as the Wimmera and Mallee farms thrashing crops of wheat, barley and oats. It towed the wooden thrashing machine behind it on its trips to these farms on hire to the farmers. Foden Compound Traction Engine Built by Foden Ltd., Sandback, England in 1914 to the order of Langwill Bros., & Davies Ltd., Melbourne, it was used on a farm for sawmilling, dam constructions and log hauling. Donated by F. Orr of Bullarto South, Victoria. Foden Compound Traction Engine - made of Steel (Painted)Foden foden, traction engine, steam, puffing billy -

Photograph - Fred Rochow Railways Collection - "Spirit of Progress" test run, November 17, 1937
The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport. The "Spirit of Progress" on a test run prior to its official launch being hauled by Locomotive S303. It was named the C.J. LaTrobe after the1st Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria, Charles Joseph Latrobe. Considered by many to be Victorian Railways' greatest passenger locomotives, the 4 S class steam locomotives were the first 3 cylinder steam locomotives. This small class was built to run the Melbourne to Albury passenger trains and spent their entire careers on the North East line. They were built unstreamlined and ran in this condition until 1937. The streamlining modifications complimented the all new "Spirit Of Progress" carriages. The S class ran the "Spirit" until 1952 at which time the newly delivered B class diesels took over. The 4 S class locomotive which were allocated to the "Spirit of Progress" were S300 - the "Mathew Flinders", withdrawn in September 1954, having covered 1,379,791 miles. S301 - the "Sir Thomas Mitchell", withdrawn in October 1953, having covered 1,414,367 miles. S302 - the "Edward Henty", withdrawn in July 1954, having covered 1,446,468 miles and S303 - the "C.J. Latrobe", withdrawn in May 1954, having covered 1,434,664 miles. On the lower front of the Locomotive "S303"railways wodonga, fred rochow, wodonga railwaymen, spirit of progress, s class steam locomotives -

Bay Steamers Maritime Museum
Newspaper clipping, Two old Victorian ladies are saved from cracking up
This newspaper clipping was collected by a member of the Bay Steamers Maritime Museum as a record of the long process to preserve and restore the steam tug Wattle. This article appeared in the newspaper ________ in 1980 to report that there were two historic vessels with a Victorian connection that were going to be saved from destruction by not-for-profit organisations. ST Wattle was to be saved by the Victorian Steamship Association and Alma Doepel by Sail and Adventure Limited and the Alma Supporters Club. This newspaper clipping is an important historic document as it records one of many instances of not-for-profit volutneer operated organisations saving important historic vessels as there are no alternatives in the government or private sector. The article records the first stages of a very long restoration period. In 2012 the Wattle and Alma Doepel continue to be in the process of restoration 30 years after this initital report. Admittedly, Wattle had many years of operation between 1980 and 2007 but this article does show how time consuming it is to preserve historic vessels and how important it is for volunteers to complete these restoration projects as there are limited options otherwise from the government or private sector.Black and white newspaper clipping outlining the recent plans to save the two historic vessels Steam Tug Wattle and sailing ship Alma Doepel. A large photoshoped image of the Wattle and Alma Doepel is at the top of the news article followed by a short section of text describing the history of the two vessels and the groups that are going to save them from detoriationst wattle, wattle, alma doepel, steam tug, sailing ship, victorian steamship association, williamstown, victorian, heritage, maritime, seaport, sail and adventure limited, alma doepel supporters club, bay steamers maritime museum, volunteers, restoration -

The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport. This locomotive was built in 1878 by Beyer Peacock & Co, Manchester, England. It arrived in Sydney on August 19, 1878 and began its working life as No 120 of C[79] class on the southern and western lines of NSW in September that year. On 24 May 1914, when the new branch line to Canberra was completed, the locomotive unofficially opened the track by pulling the first train to the construction site of the national capital. The engine was given the new number 1210 in the 1923 re-classification of NSW engines. Locomotive 1210 continued in use until 1958 when it was finally withdrawn from service. The NSW Steam Tram and Preservation Society appealed to the National Capital Development Commission (NCDC) and the NSW Railways to assist in the locomotive's preservation. As a result of the Society's appeal the locomotive was purchased by the NCDC for 800 pounds. The locomotive was relocated to the Canberra Railway Museum in 1984. It was restored with funds received from the Australian Bicentennial Authority. It was a requirement of the Bicentennial Authority Grant that the engine be operational. The locomotive was re-commissioned by the Member for Canberra, the Hon Ros Kelly, on 19 September 1988. As part of the Australian Bicentennial celebrations Locomotive 1210 attended the AusSteam '88 event in Melbourne, travelling south in the company with Locomotive 3112. It is claimed by the Australian Railway Historical Society that No 1210 is the oldest operational main line steam locomotive in the world. On front of locomotive "1210" railways wodonga, fred rochow, locomotive 1210 -
