Piece of worn trolley wire (copper, probably cadmium copper) taken from north bound trolley wire between poles 9 and 17 (Loop and St. Aidans Drive) on 4/3/1997 during replacement operations. Is badly worn on one side. OK on the other side - slightly curve with worn side on the outside of the curve. Green (Oxidized) and sides, dark brown on top. Has been cut at either end. This shirt was manufactured in 2004, and was presumably owned by a Beechworth local service personnel by the name of Cross. This piece of clothing would have been worn as part of the standard Royal Australian Naval Ratings uniform.White short sleeved shirt. Square collar with thin navy blue trim. The Community Centre was built in the early 1950’s as an all-purpose hall for the social and recreational use of the workers and families employed on the Victorian state government Kiewa Hydro-electric scheme. The hall was originally called Mt Beauty Recreation Centre and later changed to Mt Beauty Community Centre. It has been the heart of the community for over 65 years and had a heritage listing put on it around the year 2000. The Alpine Shire secured a heritage grant and the hall was restored to its former glory in 2000. Charles Leslie Mitton (1905-1968) was a pharmacist at 131 Union Road, Surrey Hills from 1933-1968. DOD 30/04/1968. Prior to coming to Surrey Hills, he was a pharmacist in Newmarket (Ref: 1931 electoral roll). He and his wife, Ethel Sylvia Elizabeth Mitton (nee Stevenson) lived at 65 Union Road. They were married in 1933 and had 2 sons and a daughter. He was followed in the business by his son John and daughter Rosalind. Alice Sedgman (nee Percy) – 1873-1945 Alice was born in Maldon in 1873, one of 9 children of William Henry Percy and his wife Unice King. Alice married Francis Sedgman, occupation painter, in 1896 and they went on to have 8 children, all born in Kew or Hawthorn before the family came to Surrey Hills. The electoral roll for 1903 shows the family living in Liddiard Street in Hawthorn and Alice’s occupation is given as home duties. It is the same in 1909 when they are living at 65 Croydon Road, Surrey Hills and continues to be thus listed in all electoral rolls until the 1943 edition, just before her death. However Mrs Sedgman was also an active nurse and midwife who often worked with Dr James Blakie, who had arrived in Surrey Hills in 1905, initially practicing from 171 Union Road and then in 1913 moving across the road to the purpose-built home and practice at 174 Union Road, now Surrey Hills Medical Centre. At this period most babies were born at home. Sometime after 1931 Alice and Francis Sedgman moved from 65 Croydon Road into 10 Grovedale Road and lived with their son Francis William Sedgman and his family for the remainder of their lives. The photo shows Mrs Alice Sedgman in early 1930s with grand-daughter Joy in the garden of her son. Behind her can be seen the fenced 'quarry' which is now parkland. Alice died in 1945 and Francis in 1951. They are buried in Boroondara Cemetery along with an infant son Clarence and daughter Marjorie. Set of three "Tram Defect Reports" .1 - Printed on orange card with a centre crease for folding "Tram Defect Report: - mid to late 1980's - mentions AVM's with some 65 defects listed and notes. Has space for Tram Number, Date, Run Number. Form No. 10247. Appears to be applicable to "All Electric" trams. Has space on the rear to record accident damage. .2 - "W class Tram Defect Report" - has spaces for faults, not convectively numbered. Catalogue. 30 page catalogue of 995 items for auction from 'Werndew' the Collier Estate mansion at 65 Irving Rd, Toorak on 12, 13, and 14 July 1954. Auctioneers- Beauchamp Bros. Collins St., Melbourne. Attached and loose are numerous newspaper articles (1954) about the Collier mansion and family. Jenkin Collier (d.1921) left his fortune, made in the 1870s building boom, to his 3 unmarried daughters who lived in 'Werndew'. Annette Collier died 1947, aged 82. Alice Collier died 1950, aged 86. Sculpture by Peter Schipperheyn. Erected by the RSL in 1984 and dedicated on 21 April 1985. The sculpture is 3m high. The memorial commemorates four Victoria Cross recipients from St Kilda: Captain A. Jacka V.C. M.C. & Bar; Major W. Ruthven V.C.; Lt. L. D. McCarthy V.C., Croix de Guerre; Ft. Lt. W. E. Newton V.C. It is dedicated in 'memory of all Australians who died in war so that we may have peace'.
