8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental CollectionPhotograph
The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. In 1977 8/13 VMR Regiment was reduced to an independent squadron A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles and in 1991 was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse forming the VMR Squadron of that regiment.Unique collection of photographs showing the first years of an armoured regiment of the post-Second World War era Citizen Military Forces showing equipment, uniforms, training and social activity and some personalities.Black and white photograph of two soldiers wearing drill uniforms and berets. Major General Sir Alan Hollick Ramsay, Director of Education 1948-1960 when he retired. He was born 12 March, 1895 and began teaching in 1912. He enlisted in the AIF as a gunner - 21/07/1915. He resumed teaching on his return from the War in 1919. In 1939 he enlisted in the 2nd AIF as Commander Royal Artillery 9th Division. He was appointed GOC (Major General) of 5th Division. He returned to the Education Department, eventually becoming Director of Education and served under both a Labour and Liberal Premier.Beige coloured paper with ink printing. Mr J.K. Turnbulls own scrap book lent by his son to Mr McCaskill. Alan Carter got it from Mr McCaskill to return but the son died and Alan Carter gave it to the Historical Society. Mr Turnbull was Ringwood's first Station Master and a well liked person in the community.Mr J.K. Turnbulls own scrap book. Large blue cardboard covers with black and red embossing and 'Scraps' on front. Blue cloth spine. No pages held by spine - five with cuttings from papers pasted on to them; three handwritten letters; several single cuttings.; 1. Five pages of newspaper cuttings pasted to page.; 2. Post Office Telegraphs 14-Jan-1891; 3. Small ad. - Frank Lowe - is running a waggonette to meet every train - stables - 'Coach and Horses Hotel' 12-Jan-1913; 4. Mr Turnbull at Healesville; a favourite Returns; two cuttings with same story.; 5. Photocopy of the 'Programme of Dances for the Opening of the Ringwood Goods Shed' Monday 28 December 1887.; 6. Handwritten in pencil - New Goods Shed 28/11/1887. Opening ceremony 2-Dec-1887 - not very legible - 4 pages (15 x 10cm); 7. Two letters to Mr Turnbull from John Ross - 17-Jan-1891; 8. Description A writing pad showing, on the cover, the helmet of a suit of armour crowned with a laurel wreath and a shield containing the words 'Our Allies' Arms.'
