This book was awarded to Florence Groves for first prize in arithmetic in 1885. Florence enrolled at Clarendon Ladies' College with her sister Blanche on 30/07/1884 at the age of 14. Father's Christian name listed in the original register as Daniel Barton residing at 18 Mc Carthur street, Ballarat. It also lists his employment as Commercial traveller.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in brown and green cloth with gilt lettering and floral decorations on front cover and spine. Sketch of fellow "Dunera" internee Siegmund Lewinsohn in Camp 2 by Robert Hofmann, former Austrian Court Painter. Photo emailed to Museum. Lewinshohn was born in Dautzig, Germany, Lewinsohn and was first interned at Hay NSW and then at Tatura. He enlisted in the Australian Army in the Employment Company (V503913) on 16 November 1942 at Royal Park, Victoria.Portrait of "Dunera" internee, Siegmund Lewinsohn. This pass was issued to Dr Margaret Alison Mackie during her time as Medical Superintendent of the Royal Women's Hospital during the Second World War. Dr Margaret Alison Mackie (1910-1991) was in active practice between 1936 and 1970. She was a Fellow of the College, and was appointed a Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for services to medicine in 1975. Small cardboard identification pass. Cover of the pass is green. Front of pass is printed with the text 'GOVERNMENT/OF/VICTORIA'. Inside of pass has identification details for Dr Margaret Mackie, along with a passport photo of Dr Mackie. and attests to her employment at the Women's Hospital. Depicting five tiny carved figures doing different jobs transferring goods at Tocumwal Railway Gauge Change. Made by former camp 2 Tatura internee after his release in 1942 to the 8th Employment Co. at Tocumwal. Kurt Lewinski was a former Dunera Boy, originally from Berlin, refugee in England in 1938 and transported to Australia in 1940.Wood carving of 5 tiny carved figures - 1 stacking cases, one carrying large filled bag on his shoulders (piece missing when items delivered), one wheeling pallet of large timber boxes, one pushing barrel and one carrying heavy box. The 1890 Maritime Strike: marine officers walked out because shipowners would not negotiate terms and conditions of employment whilst the Mercantile Marine Officers' Association was affiliated with the Victorian Trades Hall Council. Union officials proposed to disaffiliate on the condition that employers would agree to meet and reach a compromise with union delegates. The shipowners refusal to meet triggered strike action.The Maritime Strike demonstrates an historical example of an employer's attempt to undermine workplace unionism.
