Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. The M.V. Manunda is a ship owned by the Adelaide Steamship Company, that became a registered hospital ship in 1940, during World War 2. The Manunda serviced injured personnel in the Pacific and Middle East. This letter knife is highly significant to the Returned Nurses collection. Though there is a few recorded pieces of memorabilia from the M.V. Manunda, they are few and far between. This item could potentially draw attraction and attention to this collection. Silver, chrome-plated letter knife, with decorative kookaburra hilt handle. Due to age [and perhaps storage] the letter knife has turquoise and brown erosion, corrosion and rust spots, primarily upon the blade faces. One blade face includes a small, raised enamelled flag, with gilding around the flag boarder. The flag itself is white, with a blue cross and an eight-pointed red star in the centre, it is the logo of the Adelaide Steamship Company. On the same blade face as the flag, is the name of the vessel, 'M.V. Manunda'. On the opposing blade face is 'EP A1 NS', silver quality marking, and the maker's mark, 'Angus & Coote Lt.' Due to the metallic property of the letter knife, it often feels cool to the touch. Though this is true for the kookaburra hilt too, the kookaburra hilt has more texture and feels rough to the touch. Standard issue United States M1 pattern steel helmet, olive drab in colou, stretch cotton cargo type net, with fibreglass liner. On the inside of a strap in the liner '8415-153-6671' is printed in black ink. This number would appear to be the "Federal Stock Number (FSN)" which was used 1949 to 1975 when ti was replaced by "National Stock Number (NSN)' by additional of 00 after the first 4 numbers. this would indicate that it was made in USA. The chin strap and liner are both complete and fully operable. These helmets were first issued in 1941 to the United States Armed Forces. They were adopted after the Korean War by the Australian Defence Force. In the 1990s they were replaced by the Kevlar based Personnel Armour System-Ground Troop (PASGT) type helmet. However, as evidenced by this helmet, some M1 Steel helmets were not replaced in-service by the PASGT helmet and survived into the early 21st Century. Used by Royal Australian Army in Vietnam in areas where mines were significnat, such as Long Hai's mountains (together with US flak jackets), and also by Royal Australain Navy.An example of an Australian Army issue M1 steel battle helmet complete with fibreglass liner. This helmet type was issued to Australian defence personnel during the Vietnam conflict. The inner line has a transfer on the front " Australian Military Forces" with rising sun badge. The steel outer has an olive green elastic cover (similiar to cargo net) to hold camouflage material. The M1 is two "one-size-fits-all" helmets: an outer shell made of metal and a hard hat-type liner that is nestled inside the shell and contains the suspension system that would be adjusted to fit the wearer's head. Helmet covers and netting would be applied by covering the steel shell with the extra material tucked inside the shell and secured by inserting the liner. The helmet is 7 inches in height, width is 9.5 inches and length is 11 inches. The weight of a World War II era M1 is approximately 2.85 pounds including the liner and chinstrap. The 1939-45 Star may be awarded for those who undertook operational service during World War II. Eligibility The 1939-45 Star is awarded for service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945 for: a period of six months (180 days) operational service for RAN and Army personnel and RAAF non-air crew personnel a period of two months operational service for air crew personnel a period of six months service at sea for Merchant Navy provided at least one voyage was made through one of the specified areas of active operations The 1939-45 Star is awarded to Australian Civilian Personnel who served afloat with the United States Army Small Ships Section between 8 December 1941 and 2 September 1945. Eligibility is the same as that for Merchant Navy personnel. See required evidence to support a claim. The Medal The 1939-45 Star is a six–pointed star of yellow copper zinc alloy. The obverse has a central design of the Royal and Imperial cypher, surmounted by a crown. The cypher is surrounded by a circlet containing the words ‘The 1939-45 Star'. Stars issued to Australian personnel have recipient names engraved on the plain reverse. The Ribbon The 1939-45 Star ribbon has three vertical stripes of dark blue, red and light blue. The dark blue stripe represents the Naval Forces and the Merchant Navy, the red stripe the Armies and the light blue stripe the Air Forces. Clasps The ‘BATTLE OF BRITAIN' clasp was awarded to eligible air crew involved in the Battle of Britain. When the ribbon is worn alone a gilt rosette ribbon emblem is worn to denote the award of the ‘BATTLE OF BRITAIN' clasp. The ‘BOMBER COMMAND’ clasp was introduced in 2012 and is awarded to eligible Bomber Command aircrew. This shirt was manufactured in 2004, and was presumably owned by a Beechworth local service personnel by the name of Cross. This piece of clothing would have been worn as part of the standard Royal Australian Naval Ratings uniform.White short sleeved shirt. Square collar with thin navy blue trim. A steel helmet, popularly called a tin hat, is used as protective headwear by military personnel and civil workers in times of emergency and disasters. Steel helmets were first used in World War One, with the Allies troops using a design produced in London by John Brodie in 1915. This helmet was constructed in one piece pressed from a single thick sheet of steel and variants of this design have been used by military personnel ever since. It is not clear whether this particular item comes from World War One or World War Two. This steel helmet is retained as a good example of the protective headwear worn by Australian military personnel in World Wars One or Two.The crown of his helmet or tin hat is of an oval shape and it has a short flattened brim.
