In 1869 Mount Pleasant Common School opened, first Principal, John Brown, later named Vermont Primary School.In 1869 Mount Pleasant Common School opened, first Principal, John Brown, later named Vermont Primary School. In 1954 a new building erected in Nurlendi Road. 2 years later another building constructed and remaining students on Canterbury Road relocated too. The old building was occupied by a Glen Waverley group opening a church school in 1990. The building was vacant again and in 1991 a fire almost destroyed the old school. Gum Loong is an authentic Chinese fortune dragon who was awakened at Sovereign Hil in Ballarat on 11 March 1995. Gum Loong was created by the Canadian Lead, Mt Blowhard and Sebastopol Primary School Communities with support from the Ballarat Chinese Community Association, the Australia-China Friendship Society in Ballarat, the Asia Education and DEET. A Gum Loong Dragon Team of at least 80 students representing the three schools assist him on his special outings giving him legs. Gum Loong's body is 50 m long. Fifteem wooden barrels make his backbone. On 24th September 1888 a wooden state school opened on land purchased on the north west corner of Whitehorse and Mitcham Roads. In 1890 a contract was let for the construction of a one-room brick school house on that site. By 1907 student numbers had risen to 120 so the Church of Christ Hall was leased for 10/- a week. By 1922 cracks had appeared, plaster had fallen in the school and both the Brittania Street Scout Hall and the Methodist Church has been leased for classrooms.
