This image was taken for the purposes of illustrating Jack Harvey's book 'Eureka rediscovered'. According to the State Library of Victoria catalogue the work is an over-painted photographic print, photographed by an unknown photographer from the painted canvas by Izett Watson and Thaddeus Welch, which was exhibited as a painted cyclorama in the 'Battle of Waterloo' Cyclorama building, Fitzroy, ca. 1891. This is based on the evidence that the pulleys and brick wall are discernible at the top edge of the image which B. Ireland has not over-painted. This artist may by Beryl Ireland, who was a miniaturist and studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School in the 1870s. Beryl Ireland was the niece of Richard Davies Ireland (1816-1877), the lawyer for the Eureka defendants in 1855. Information provided by Dr. Mimi Colligan, 2002. Object was gifted to Dr Lennard Travers upon his retirement from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, 1964. It was later donated to ANZCA. Lennard Travers, born in Melbourne in 1906, completed his MBBS at the University of Melbourne in 1930. After working for a brief period at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Travers travelled to the United Kingdom achieving his Fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. He returned to Australia prior to the outbreak of World War II serving as the honorary anaesthetist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. In 1950, Travers joined the Australian Society of Anaesthetists overseeing the development of the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He was appointed Dean of the Faculty in 1959. Silver plate tray, presented to Dr Lennard Travers on his retirement from Royal Melbourne Hospital, 1964. Embellishments and decorations around the edge of the tray also in silver. The middle of the tray has an inscription confirming the tray was presented to Dr Travers. Around the middle inscription are the signatures of other employees at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Manufacturer's mark on the reverse of the tray. No other distinguishing features. The Queen's Baton Relay has been the traditional curtain-raiser to the Commonwealth Games since 1958. It symbolises the gathering of people from across the Commonwealth. On 14 March 2005 Her Majesty placed a message in the baton at Buckingham Palace, signalling the start of a journey of almost 180,000 kilometres. The baton's journey to the opening ceremony took exactly one year and one day, arriving at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the opening ceremony of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games on 15 March 2006. It was the first baton relay to visit all 71 nations of the Commonwealth. Athletes and non-athletes alike shared the privilege of carrying the baton. In Bendigo two sites were chosen for events. The article featured in the Port Gazette seems to be a profile of James and his works and headline being: "Jack's Friend" Rev Ebenezer James one of the early Chaplains based at the Mission to Seafarers. He ministered to and advocated on behalf of the seagoing fraternity both merchant and Naval forces and was an instrumental force in the stamping out of the practice of crimping and the exploitation of seafarers. He received and forwarded the letter from 22 sea captains (MTSV 0030 requesting the establishment of a Mission in the vicinity of the Australian Wharf. James' brother was an MLC and his daughter Britomarte is also noted with an entry in the ADB. Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020.
