Personal Effects,men's shirt studs, c1900
A shirt stud is a decorative fastener that fits onto a buttonhole on the front of a pleated shirt, or onto the starched bib of a stiff-front shirt. Such shirts have special buttonholes solely for shirt studs. A shirt stud may be fashioned from alloys, precious metals, and gemstones—materials uncommon to buttons sewn on shirts. The stud may have an inlay, such as of pearl or onyx. Dress code of the modern western world reserves shirt studs for men's formal wear and some semi-formal occasions. In the western world, shirt studs were first used in the mid-19th century, when some shirt fronts were too stiff to close with buttons. So remains the case for the heavily starched, modern full dress shirts worn with white tie. A collection of men's shirt studs in black and white and in various styles, and sizesclothing, shirts, menswear, early settlers, pioneers, moorabbin, bentleigh, cheltenham, jewellery, dinner suits -

Craft work, doll, wool chain stitch, 20thC
20th C and probably earlier families could make this simple 'knitting machine' by using a piece of round, hollow wood and knocking 4 nails into one end of the cylinder leaving a protrusion of 2cm. An empty cotton reel was commonly used with left over knitting wool. Children were taught to wind the wool around the nails in loops, figure of 8 and other patterns so that a chain was made which gradually protruded through the base of the cylinder as a knitted chain. The chains could be made to any length and then sewn together to make a usable object eg face washer.Gladys Reed was a member of the Ormond Choral Society c 1950. who performed plays and musicals the City of Moorabbin and she was skilled in hand knitting, crochet and dressmakingGladys Reed was a member of the Ormond Choral Society c 1950. who performed plays and musicals in the City of Moorabbin and this Doll was made and used by her family.c1950A small piece of painted, carved wood with central hollow and 4 nails on top used for making/ knitting a woollen chain.Painted doll featuresknitting, clothing, haberdashery, crochet, doilies, brighton, moorabbin, pioneers, dressmaking, market gardeners, early settlers, craftwork , bentleigh, lacework, moorabbin shire, reed gladys, dairy farms, fruit orchards -

Textile, John Parkes, Conflagration, 2017
John Parkes avoids technology. This work expects the viewer to understand the importance of the hand and time… The blanket and the apron were gifted by friends in Germany. The apron was worn by Helen in her studio practice as a jeweller. The blanket was a find in the cellar of their Munich apartment. The red moleskin cloth was an OP shop find and originally a eucalyptic green. This cloth was discharged and overdyed. Cloth will often sit around the house, unattended, until ideas germinate. Is “Art” about “Art” or about the “Artist”?... There is a Buddhist notion of not writing in the first person, in that the Ego is not employed. There is a Japanese tradition “Boro” in which cloth is not discarded but repaired. These three cloths are now one.Wangaratta Art Gallery Collection - Winner WCTA 2017A square handsewn textile that features a white apron that has red running stitch squares, holes, hand paint stains across with initials in blue thread sewn in the bottom right corner of the apron which is in the center of the work. A brown wool cloth that features rows of white running stitches and red embroidery patches borders the apron, which is bordered by strips of red patterned fabric that has been dyed and features lines of red running stitches.wangaratta art gallery, textile, wcta, john parkes -

Clothing - Costume - Blazer, 1940 Honor Blazer - Athletics XVIII, c1940
In 1940 Harold John Hassell was a 4th year student in the Science school. He won the Mica Smith Trust Fund (open championship) and was awarded the 1940 Honour Blazer. The School of Mines was established in 1870 in Ballarat, making it Australia's third oldest tertiary institution. Redmond Barry was its first president, and he was involved in the creation of university degree level courses for the school. The School of Mines was divided into a tertiary division and a technical division. The tertiary division provided higher education courses such as mining engineering, geology, education and business studies, while the technical division provided such programs as wool classing, plumbing and bricklaying. It remained in that form until the 1967 when it was split into three institutions, Ballarat School of Industries, Ballarat Technical School, and Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. They remained three entities until 1976. Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education merged into Ballarat College of Advanced Education. The Ballarat School of Industries and Ballarat Technical School merged into the School of Mines and Industries, Ballarat (SMB) in 1976. Several entities merged or had arrangements with SMB. In 1994, a memo of understanding (MOU) was signed between SMB and the Ararat Technical School, which was founded in 1969. Then, in 1998, SMB and the Horsham-based Wimmera Institute of TAFE (1984), dating back to 1882, merged into the University of Ballarat to create a larger University. This three buttoned, bottle green woolen blazer is edged in black twill piping and has a Ballarat School of Mines coat of arms on pocket "Honor 1940 ATHS - XVIII. The two side pockets are also edged in the black twill and there is a trim of the twill 8.3cm from the sleeve cuff. The breast pocket has a top binding of yellow and blue stripes.
