Full colour, depicts crewman in 'crows nest' of southern whaler, consisting of slight platform resting on two cross-trees as head of mast and 2 padded rings fixed waist high. Syd Cuffe was the Portland Town Crier from 1983 to 2013. The role of Town Crier was created for Syd Cuffe in 1983 in the lead up to Portland’s 150th anniversary celebrations held in 1984-85. 200 items from Mr. Cuffe’s estate were donated to the Glenelg Shire Cultural Collection. CEMA Art Collection Winner of 1968 Portland Art Society Art Prize for the category Oil or similar medium.The painting depicts several tall, dead trees in the foreground with dense living trees in the background. The work has an interesting texture created through the use of clearly defined thick paint strokes. This technique is particularly evident in the foreground where it has been used to create the ground from which the dead trees stand. The work has a painted wooden frame with material mount and non-reflective glass.Front: R.
