Newspaper clipping titled: “End of the line” The Sun, Saturday July 22 1972 Photos and text of “toastrack” tram # 20 Tram from St Kilda Station to Brighton Beach electric street railway, Bob Prentice, Prahran back garden, 1913 vintage, bought the tram in 1959 when the line closed. Retains original colour scheme of chocolate, cream and read. Served its last days as a breakdown tram confined to Elwood depot. Built by Pengelley & Co of Adelaide in 1913, entered service between May and July 1913. Number 20 served for 5 years until the toastrack design became obsolete and it was replaced. Conductor had to move along narrow running board and enter compartments from the outside to collect fares 5 mile journey took 29 minutes Trams had gas-light fittings made of brass and displayed notice to occupants: "Please hand as nearly as possible the exact fare to the conductor. Has advertisements for Anderson's Furniture of Chapel St Prahran and E. Crook Men's Boys and Boots Chapel St, South Yarra. Map details the Circular Tramway Route, by cable and electric - shows the lines of the PMTT, HTT, rail lines and cable tramways. Printed in full colour on gloss paper with a front cover in cartoon form of the things you should not do on a tram - Cartoon by Golding. Was a free newspaper. Magazine of Newspaper Covers City Real Estate, out on the town, Health and Beauty, entertainment, classifieds and careers. Page 6 - article titled "Commuter fare blitz" - about proposed checking of Metcards, but there were many complaints and issues with machines not working and legal challenges. Pages 8 and 9 - article "Tram Etiquette", with the sub-headings "in the absence of conductors, have we become confused about public behaviour on privatised trams". Looks at issues at how people use the tram system with photos of people using trams. Also has a side item with people's photographs titled "What's getting up people's noses on Melbourne trams?" Ticket - light brown paper, "Combined Fare Ticket" - MMTB, over printed with a red 5d, and Ticket Number A B 425191. with conditions of travel on the front. On the rear is printed in red ink is an advert for B. Matthews Pty Ltd, with head office at 102-110 Toorak Road, South Yarra, advertising a Motor Funeral Service. Dean Filgate advised 24-12-2020: Unfortunately an un-used example, from the same block that most collectors obtained one for their collection ! There are genuine used examples of similar 6d (purple overprint) tickets, however I cannot find my "files" about these: there were at least two places this type of ticket was used in the early to mid-1930s. One was a "Combined Fare Ticket to and from the City via The Coburg Electric and Brunswick Cable Cars", the other was used on the Glen Huntly lines to enable passengers to pay only once for their journey to the City, as until 1934 trams from Glen Huntly Depot did not run direct to the City - you had to transfer trams at Elsternwick or Ripponlea.trams, tramways, melbourne, tickets, mmtb, advertisements

Demonstrates the method of dispensing tickets by conductors, how the tickets could be arranged, although the arrangement may not exactly represent the 1958-1963 arrangements of a ticket wallet. Yields information about the style and printing of tickets used in Ballarat and Bendigo tramways and how they were presented. Has a strong association with Travis Jeffery.Ticket wallet with a set of nine 1950-60's Ballarat tram tickets set up to represent a typical conductor's set of tickets by Travis Jeffrey, though these may not exactly line up with the fares at any one period - 1958 to 1963 following the introduction of concession tickets. Does not have a 3d City Section Ticket. 4000 - Sheet of leather, approx. 2mm thick, stained brown with four pockets formed on each side with another sheet of leather, stitched on all sides to form pockets to hold eight blocks of tickets. Stitching is a light cream or white colour cotton. Digital image of Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust (PMTT) bogie tram No. 35 at the Burke Road terminus c1914. The tram has the destination of St Kilda Road. Three crewman are standing by the front of the tram - motorman or driver and two conductors. Two conductors were used as the seating arrangements had two full width cross bench seats as shown in the floor plan - see second image. This prevented the conductor collecting fares from all passengers unless they swung to the outside of the tram. Not known whether this was a full time arrangement or for peak periods only. The Norman Oliver collection. Norman Oliver was three times Mayor of Bendigo - 1950-51, 1964-65, 1970-71. Sixteen typed pages of speech notes. In the format of his talks for 3BO 'The Mayor Speaks'. Untitled and undated, though references suggest 1951. Corrections in red ink.
