Clothing - Dress, Wedding dress, 1892
This dress was worn by Matilda Kinross McDonald, nee Herd (1871-1943) for her wedding to George William Mitchell McDonald in Geelong in 1892. Two-piece wedding dress comprising separate bodice (.1) and skirt (.2) made of figured coffee-coloured silk woven with large sprays of foliage and berries. The front of the bodice is decorated with a cream-coloured hand-made lace. The bodice is cut asymmetrically, with the front panel wrapping over to the left proper side seam. The fitted sleeves are cut with fullness in the head and narrowing at the elbow and wrist in a leg-of-mutton style. The bodice is backed with a dark brown glazed cotton and has 13 bones. This artwork was created by French artist EdmeĢ Jean Pigal (1798-1872) as part of a series entitled 'Album comique de pathologie pittoresque'.A framed print depicting a scene from a music room. On the left, a man is waving a violin and bow sitting in front of a music stand. On the right, another man has his hand on his chest and is coughing. A piano, string instruments and sheet music are visible in in the background, and a cello is depicted in the foreground. Text printed above image reads 'ALBUM COMIQUE'. Text printed below artwork reads 'Ambroise Tardieu Editeur & du Battain, No 12/ / Lith. de Langlume & de l'Abbaye No. 4. Bodice boned below bust to narrow waist, sleeves flaring at cuffs. Cotton lining, remnants of a lacy fabric at neckline. High collar, side fastening, dark blue braid trim at cuffs, collar & front. Certificate - Australian Natives Association Certificate, c. 1939
The Australian Natives Association (ANA) was founded in Melbourne in 1871. Its membership was restricted to white men born in Australia and its aim was to benefit them.Certificate issued by the Australian Natives Association. Portland Branch's ex President's certificate. Issue to Mr W.A. Mills. Occupied the position from 16 May 1938 to 15 May 1939. Signed by the President and the Secretary (illegible, faded). The certificate has the Australian emblem at the top under which is an orange banner with the words ' Australian Natives Association' across. Under this is a woman in classical style dress holding an Australian flag in her right hand and a document in her left which reads, 'Constitution of the Australian Commonwealth'. A circular frame states the owner of the certificate and why it was issued. On the other side of the circle is a man. He wears leather riding boots, cream trousers and a blue shirt. He is holding something in his left hand. Under is a central star in which is an image of Australia. Either side is a picture of the sea with an Aboriginal man standing at the shore by some boats. Jane Hamilton applied for a licence for the Queen's Arms hotel in Quarry Hill in Dec. 1872. It also provided 8 rooms for boarding of gentlemen. Jane was the wife of James Hamilton jnr. who, until 1872, had been in partnership with his father, James snr. at Hamilton and Son, wholesale stationers and general merchants of Hargreaves St., Bendigo. At this time there was a conveyance five times a day between the Queen's Arms and the Shamrock hotel.A letter written to the Bendigo Advertiser by E.V. Gray; the letter was published on 09/06/1972.
