Document - Palais de Dance Warrnambool, 1954
Warrnambool’s first Palais was established in the Hotel Mansions on the corner of Koroit and Kepler Streets and destroyed by fire in 1929. The second Palais was established at the Liberty Theatre in Lava Street. The third Palais was established in the Oddfellows Hall building in Koroit Street in 1939. Dances were held weekly and sometimes more often and attracted musical talent from the Warrnambool district and even from Melbourne with band leaders such as Tommy Davidson and Vin Mills. In 1974 the Warrnambool City Council bought the building and it was used only intermittently for entertainment purposes. Today the building is in private hands and is used for commercial and business purposes. This advertisement is of considerable significance as it comes from the Palais de Danse dance theatre which was important as a social institution in Warrnambool for over 30 years. The advertisement also reminds us of the era (1940s, 50s, 60s) when beauty pageants and Belle of the Ball competitions were popular all over Australia. This is a document in a brown plastic frame with a gold-coloured metal inside edging. The frame has a glass front. The document is a 1954 advertisement for the Palais de Danse dance floor in the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street, Warrnambool. The advertisement has black and red printing on a buff-coloured background. The advertisement has an ornamental edge around the printing and a red-coloured photograph of the dance floor. ‘Palais de Danse, Warrnambool, proclaims The Belle of the Western District, The Largest Provincial Competition, Biggest Prizes Ever Offered, The Most Beautiful Girls in the Western District’ etc etcpalais de danse, warrnambool, beauty pageants, warrnambool -

Handmade Tool - Insect Cover or Sieve or Fishing Net or yabby trap
Flies are plentiful and a problem especially in Australia's summer. Farms were a breeding ground for flies that bred in cow manure. Fly-wire was used to keep flies away from food as well as light cloth covers. Farmers could use this sieve to fill with sand etc. to sort the sizes and also to use for eg. wheat to sort the grain. Yabbies are trapped in the creek or river by leaving food in the net for the yabby to crawl into.Food covers were used by residents of the Kiewa Valley especially as many of them were dairy farmers. Farmers often made their own tools for a purpose such as sieving or for the family catching yabbies to eat or for fun.Tall triangular steel fly wire cover with a steel handle and frame. or The frame can be held in order to fill the sieve or to empty it. or the frame can hold bait for yabbiesfood cover, fly-wire, flies, sieve, handmade tool -

Equipment - First Aid Case, Thomas Urquhart & Son Pty Ltd (Thos. Urquhart), 1930-1939
This small, portable 1930s Sanax First Aid Case has been strongly constructed, with corners reinforced with metal to take knocks and bumps, so it could be quickly transported to the site of an emergency. Having these supplies organised into a kit made them easily accessible and reduces time to take them to the site of the accident. It was possibly designed for use in factories because the booklet in the case states that the kit complies with “Part 1, Victorian Factories Regulations”. The text of the printed brand “Sanax First Aid Case” is right-way up when the case stands vertically on its hinged side. In modern times people are well aware of the importance of quick treatment when accident and injury occur. However, before the first commercial First Aid Kit was made by Johnson & Johnson in 1888, people had little knowledge about treating injuries and lacked information about suitable supplies to keep on hand for emergencies. They were often unaware of how to help in that critical time before the doctor or other assistance arrived, a particularly important time for the many people living in remote areas. A quote from Johnson’s & Johnson’s 1888 price list explains “It is a fact, which is everywhere being recognized, that many lives are lost and much suffering entailed in such accidents on account of the lack of the simple but necessary articles required to afford prompt assistance to the wounded.” One example of the value of First Aid assistance to community groups is shown in an article from the Weekly Times, 29th November 1930. It records a report from the Annuello Branch of the Younger Set (a Country Women’s Organisation), telling that on Armistice Day their president Mrs Jamieson, presented the Annuello School with the gift of a Sanax Red Cross First Aid outfit, which was accepted as being “of great practical use to the scholars.” (Annuello is a remote wheat growing area in the Mallee region of North Western Victoria, which became a soldier settlement area after World War I. There is a strain of wheat named ‘Annuello’ due to its suitability for that area. ) The Sanax Case in our Collection contains instructions, equipment and medical items suitable for use in emergency situations. The Case was one of 42 patterns available from Sanax that conformed to ‘Part 1, Victorian Factories Regulations’. It includes items made by Sanax Company and by Burroughs Wellcome & Co. (Australia) Ltd., Sydney, NSW. A quote at the back of the First Aid Emergency Instructions booklet says: “Sanax products are made in Australia by or under the supervision of qualified chemists, from the highest quality materials. They are dependable for the purposes written on labels.” BOOKLET included in First Aid Case: “SANAX” First-Aid Emergency Instructions has orange cover and white pages, joined in the centre by two staples. Booklet contains First Aid Instructions for general events listed in alphabetical order. It also contains an indexed sections headed “Poisoning, and what to do” written by S.A. There are advertisement for Sanax products throughout the booklet that include; - Sanax Ambulance Stretcher for timber mills, mines, ships and quarries - Saw dust masks (porous rubber) for workers in dust, paint or duco sprayers Inside cover lists Sanax’s Australian made products including - tablets and powders for headaches, neuralgia, influenza, colds - snuff for Catarrh that is “quite harmless” - First Aid Cases that come in a range of 42 patterns - sunburn preventatives and treatments - healing salve for carbuncles, pock, pimples, boils, varicose ulcers etc. - snake bite outfits and kits LEAFLETS included in First Aid Case: (1) Tannafax Tannic Acid Jelly. Photograph - Black & White Photograph/s, Australian Govt. Department of Information, late 1940's
Black and white photograph taken from St Pauls Cathedral Melbourne, looking south over Princes Bridge, early 1950's. Has nine trams in the view, mainly W2's, but one W3 and many motor vehicles, trucks etc. Shows the gardens in the now Southbank area, the junction just past the bridge of South Melbourne tram line, Wirth Bros Circus and other buildings, Prince Henry's Hospital. In particular is an Olympic pool direction sign hanging below the Batman Ave tram sign. This would have been the pool in Batman Ave, nearer to Flinders St, within the Flinders St yard complex, not the 1956 pool. Directly below is a female pedestrian dress in the classic 1950's "Dior" look. Over the bridge on the west side is "The Trocadero" formerly The Green Mill Dance Hall opened on 07/09/1926. West of that again is "Olympia" run by Wirth's . In the distance is Prince Henry's Hospital, the tall section was built in 1942, since demolished. Rod Atkins noted that the Olympia burnt down in the early fifties about the same the Trocadia closed, so pre 1953. Note the centre pole is still place at the Sturt Street intersection. In Batman Ave we have two W2's 401 and earlier one. In St Kilda Road we have four W2's in foreground in then W3 - No. 667 then a W4 then a SW6 in the distance. Outbound on route 4D is 578, behind it is 340 on route 5. A safety zone is between 578 and 340.Stamped on rear "Australian Official Photograph / Department of Information" and the number "L3121" in pencil.trams, tramways, swanston st, princes bridge, melbourne, south melbourne, tram 401, tram 667, tram 578 -

Postcard, Murfett Publishers, MMTB Bus 583 AEC Mk111 no 583, early to mid 1970's
Postcard - full colour, Divided back type of MMTB Bus 583 AEC Mk111 no 583 Reg : AT083 entered service 1953 body by Martin and King - two man crew, 41 seats. Notes from Rod Atkins 24/5/2019: Bound for : "Fisherman's Bend via Williamtown Road" on Spencer Street Bridge heading south. When: It's what is missing in the photo gives us a the clue. It after 1968 as the new Stock Exchange building at 357 Collins Street is completed. but before 1973 when the new MLC building was open at 303 Collins Street on corner of Elizabeth Street. But the "2" between the destination and route number boxes on bus tells us its after November 1970. Therefore I would date the post card photograph to around 1971-1972 and prior to the start of the third viaduct between Flinders St and Spencer St. Published by National View by Murfett Publishers Australia. Has the details on the rear with place for stamp, address etc and logo.trams, tramways, king st, bridges, railways, buses, fisherman's bend -

Photograph - Black & White Photograph/s, c1926
Black and white photograph of the construction of the tram track in St Kilda Road, during 1925 or 1926 by the Foundation Construction Ltd, with a concrete mixer tracked vehicle and two aggregate or crushed rock trucks. Photo from the Collection of the Department of Infrastructure now with the Public Records Office - image number H514. Note: this photo is now out of copyright and was not an original VR photograph, but one copied from another source and collected as their Heritage series. See Image 3674i2 and 3674i3 for a digital image of the card photograph at the PRO on 7/1/2019 that this photograph comes from. Further notes from Rod Atkins 11/7/2019: The cement mixer was state of the art machine at the time. "Buddy" in the USA were making them but this one is slightly different and may have been made by a company call AAC in Sheffield U.K. You can just make out the word " ….field" etc … on the water tank . The sign; now this is very interesting. "The Foundation Company" is the Australian company of the one in London.. from The Argus at the time. run by no less than by Herbert Del Cott Ply Ltd. (you can just make that out in the bottom line of the sign.) A rather interesting person in Melbourne society between the wars. His name pops up a lot in The Argus. was not short of a pound either.... Had his "Buick" stolen from Russell Street in 1920. Had some issues with wages on Wellington Street conversion. Looks to have run a electrical business before seeing opportunity with cable tram replacement coming up. In the 1930' lived in Stevenson Street, Kew. Travelled a lot to Europe. (Austria) …..Has Department of Infrastructure copy right stamp on rear and number "H 514" in ink on rear and "2-1"trams, tramways, st kilda rd, trackwork, construction, conversion -

Currency - Coin, Robert Hyde & Co. Shipping Merchants, 1861
The donor (a local resident.) of this coin found this penny token coin in the sand dunes of Lady Bay, Warrnambool, in 2023. The coin could have come from a local shipwreck, passengers, or members of the community. Trade was carried out along the southwest coast of Victoria between Melbourne and Portland, with the Port of Warrnambool receiving passengers and goods by coastal traders, the steamboat that set off from ports every few days. One such vessel was the steamship SS Edina that made her first voyage from Melbourne to Portland in 1863. For around a decade or so in the Gold Rush period in Australia there was a shortage of official government currency. It was acceptable during this time to use token coins minted by local businesses to be used within their store, much like the loyalty and rewards cards that businesses give their customers in modern times. The tokens were also a good way to advertise their wares and details. The first token was introduced in Melbourne in 1848 and were used until 1868, when they became illegal in New South Wales. They were minted in Australia and overseas. The token was issued by Robert Hyde & Co. who traded in second-hand goods such as old clothes, sheets, metal items and glass, which they resold to be re-manufactured, or "recycled".A token such as this one identifies businesses existing in the post-Gold Rush period in Australia. Round copper coin. Penny token coin bearing the Australian Coat of Arms and motto. The coin also has the company's name, location, nature of business and motto. The coin has grooves around the edge. It was made in 1861.OBVERSE: Logo: (Australian Coat of Arms), Motto: "PEACE & PLENTY", Date: 1861 REVERSE: "ROBERT HYDE & CO MELBOURNE", "GENERAL MARINE STORE, SHIPPERS OF RAGS GLASS METALS &.C"flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, warrnambool, great ocean road, shipwreck coast, merchant token, melbourne, token, australian token, trade token, coins, merchants, medal, colonisation, gold rush, robert hyde & co., general marine store, shippers of rags glass metals etc., numismatics, second-hand scrap, scrap goods
