Research suggests that this dress dates from the early 1920's when elastic was first used in clothing.Deep cream cotton muslin ladies tea dress. High waisted, square neckline, elbow length sleeves edged in cotton lace. Skirt has four panels of fabric - two side panels extending around front and back, and centre panels at front and back. French seams - some stitched in pink thread - machine stitched. Centre panels have two rectangular inserts of cotton lace. Each side panel has one rectangular insert of cotton lace. This gown dated to c. 1910-1910Long sleeved full length dressing gown of cream coloured satin. Front opening with three passementerie buttons at centre front with fabric ties at waist (60cm). Ties split into two parts at halfway point Each tie is tied at the end with a thin cord and finished with two tassels with cord covered beads. Garment, including long sleeves, is fully lined with cream coloured satin with decorative stitching pattern.Rounded neckline at back with stand up collar (5cm) decorated with lace. Lace fabric panel across shoulders at front and back. Both sides of front opening have a border (7cm) from shoulder to hem. Neckline dips to V shape above waist. Panels decorated with piping. Front panels lined with cream coloured embroidered lace netting to top button. A different patterned lace lines the top part of the opening panels and extends across the neckline at the back.Two hanging loops attached inside shoulders at top of sleeves. Long sleeves of cream coloured lace fabric with double layer of satin lining. Each sleeve has a panel of decorative fabric from the top of the shoulder to the wrist (same decorative fabric as that used for border of front opening). Sadly, the satin has split, on each opening panel. Some colouring has been chipped from the buttons. Long narrow fitted sleeves shaped at the elbow. Decorative cuffs at wrists of ruched frilling (8cm) with triangularturned flap on top edge at back of cuff. Back of dress has four panels. The two centre panels extend below waist to to two points. The centre skirt panel is attached under the centre two panels and is gathered by five deep pleats to form a bustle effect extending to a long train. Front centre panel has horizontal gathering with ruched frills in centre, and at sides. Side panels overlap front centre panel. Hemline has pleated frill above the hem which is finished with cord.
