The 'Black Saturday' bushfires were a series of bushfires that ignited across the Australian state of Victoria on and around Saturday, 7 February 2009. It was Australia's worst ever natural disaster. The fires occurred during extreme bushfire-weather conditions and resulted in Australia's highest ever loss of life from a bushfire: 173 people died and 414 were injured as a result of the fires.This work is by a local contemporary artist with a national and international reputation for figurative and portrait works. The 'Black Saturday' series is a powerful investigation of emotion and grief as experienced by many Nillumbik residents during the 2009 'Black Saturday' bushfires. A cluster of bronze figurines either stand alone or embrace in groups. Their expressions and gestures of despair are made more pertinent with the raw like application and surface treatment of the material used. Aloysious McGann was a WW1 soldier, service number 2365, who was killed in action at France in June 1917. He was a resident of Chiltern and was married to Celia Elizabeth McGann from Lake Moodemere, Rutherglen. He was a cadet and a Citizens Military Forces member prior to the commencement of WW1. Aloysious served with 37 Batallion, 3 Division. Prior to his enlistment Aloysious was a grocer by trade. He is buried at Grave number 3456 Menin Gate Memorial Ypres Belgium. Aloysious McGann was a WW1 soldier (1914-1918) and Chiltern Resident, who served in the Great War and was killed in action in France Buried at Ypres Belgium. The quilt, alternatively known as a wagga due to its improvised nature of creation, was made by Harry Walter Hewitt Wilton (great grandfather of donor), b.1872, d.1950. Harry joined the Essex Regiment and served in the British Military in India, as well as seeing action in the Boer War. Married wife Mary Elizabeth in India in 1895, she was a seamstress. Harry was injured during a battle and made this quilt as part of his rehabilitation. Quilt was made using woolen army singlets. Harry and Mary moved to Victoria, near Orbost, in 1914. Patchwork style quilt with coloured pieces of dyed woolen singlets stitched together over a backing. Features feather stitching between pieces and around border edges. Souvenir is from an aircraft flown by 2LT Lewis Charles Burford Sheppard RFC, killed when his aircraft crashed on landing on the Bapaume Rd, Fremicourt in the Somme Area. A portion of a wing stay was cut from the aircraft and fashioned into a war trophy with the manufacturers logo and a hand written inscription detailing the crash on the reverse. This was especially so within the Kiewa Valley and surrounds. Fashion in Australia and more so in areas with little or no access to overseas or city merchandise lacked "modern fashionable" clothes e.g. the latest from England and Paris. This doll was a highly treasured toy for a girl. The amount of wear and tear given to this doll indicates the great attachment to and comfort that its owner had with it. This doll could have been on a farm or cattle property in the Kiewa Valley rather than in the town.Due to the lack of social activities in the valley during the period, self amusement at home and limited interaction outside of the valley would have been this dolls prime role for its owner. The time between the two World Wars was one of recession and limited funds outside that required for survival. This item is part of the collection of Ecclesiastical Linen once used by St. Andrews Anglican Church on the corner of the Esplanade and 14 Drummond St, Dennington, Victoria. The first Anglican service was conducted on December 22nd, 1907. The church was decommissioned in January 2003. This item is part of the Ecclesiastical Linen collection, which is significant for its examples of handworked embroidery and drawn-thread work from the early 20th century. The items are also examples of a collection used for religious services during this period. The Ecclesiastical Linen is also significant for its association with the early development of the local township of Dennington and the importance the the community of setting aside land in the 1850's for the purpose of religious worship. The Ecclesiastical Linen is also significant for its connection to St Andrews Anglican Church, Dennington. The church was funded and attended by the local community in the early 1900's and is now listed on the Victorian Heritage Database (VHD 118083) as a building of historical and social significance. From the Till collectionTHE TILL COLLECTION SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT|The significance of the Alwyn Till Collection is that Alwyn was born in Mitcham in 1921. He attended Mitcham Primary School and Box Hill Boys High School. He served his Community mainly through his activities within the Christ Church Anglican Church Mitcham. He joined the Royal Australian Airforce in World War II in September 1939. He trained as a Pilot in Australia and Canada, was posted to England and saw action in Europe. He was shot down over France and rescued by and then joined the French Resistance and while fighting with them was fatally shot. A Baron fighting with him wrote to his mother to inform her of his death.|Alwyn's parents were Evaleen Victoria Till (nee Maggs) and Sydney Norman Till who first lived in Creek Road Mitcham, before moving to 573 Whitehorse Road Mitcham. His father served in World War I where his eyesight was damaged and he was taught by the then Blind Institute in suitcase making of which we have two examples in this collection. He died in 1931. Alwyn took over responsibility for his mother and sister Alison. We can understand how devastated his mother and sister would have been at the news of Alwyn's feeling that he must serve his country in World War 11.|His letters home were so precious to them that they carefully kept all his correspondence, notices of death and condolences from friends. After Alison's death in 2007 her relation Joan Walker transcribed each of Alwyn's letters home into two bound volumes. The executors, Joan Walker and Anne Drew deposited the original letters with the Whitehorse Historical Society. Due to their significance as historical documents of one serviceman's complete correspondence with his family the Whitehorse Historical Society Committee after consultation with the donors deposited the original letters with the State Library of Victoria. The Whitehorse Historical Society retains the copies.|Alison and her mother kept many family memorabilia and personal items which make up this significant collection as they show how people lived, worked and served in the local community and municipality.|This collection represents the love and devotion of the women to their families during the course of two world wars. The father was disabled as a result of World War 1 and died an early death and a son who thereafter took on the responsibility as head of the family at an early age. This young handsome charismatic son served his community in peace time and gave his life in World War 11. This battle dress jacket is dated 1969 (manufacturing date). It was issued to the “Prince of Wales’s Light Horse’ Regiment however the date of issue is unknown. A Prince of Wales Light Horse unit was based in Kyneton, a neighboring town to Woodend. This jacket likely originated from the Kyneton area. The jacket type was still in use during the Vietnam war in which the Regiment participated.
