Eltham Gateway, Site of the former Eltham Shire Council offices at 895 Main Road, Eltham Demolished by State Government appoointed Commisoners in August 1996, the site was the original location of Shillinglaw Cottage which was acquired by Eltham Shire in 1963. Series consists of one folder of photographs relating to Art in Public Places awards. The folder is divided into two parts: I) Presentation and Installation - 1992 Award. Colour prints featuring Shire President Pamela Sladden opening "The Tower" at Weir St Park, Montmorency. Also pictured are Shire Arts officers Caroline Shaw and Chris Marks. Folder includes: * B& W and colour photographs taken on the night of the award presentation. * Four colour photographs of Weir St Park prior to installation of tower. * Colour photographs of two alternative sites for installation of tower. 2) Selection of 18 colour photographs taken at Selection Night for the 1994 Art in Public Places award. This event took place in the new Eltham Library. Also included arc panels of32 photographs (colour and B&W) of Alistair Knox Park and the immediate area around the new Eltham Library - photocopies of these pictures were provided to artists to give them a feel for the area. Series consists of over 140 volumes of Council Records. These records (apart from the Rates Books) fall outside the provisions of the Victoria Public Record Office Disposal Schedule - ie. Retention is at the discretion of Council. A complete listing of the volumes is attached, however the collection includes Minute Books, Letter Books, Country Roads Board Ledgers, Finance Committee Finance Books, Water Supply Rate Books, and numerous cash books and ledgers. The Memorial Park and Shire of Eltham War Memorial tower are sited at was once known as Garden Hill and was reknowned for its panoramic views it offered tourists from the 1880s on. Construction of Eltham Town Park; landscape has been scupltured and lakes formed. View looking up towards intersection of Bridge Street with Main Road. On the high side of Main Road is Garni Burges former home at the corner of Bridge Street then further to the left the former bakery on the corner of York Street. On the opposite corner is the feed store now the site of Le Pine Funerals. Shillinglaw Cottage was relocated in 1963 from its former site a few hundred metres up Main Road to make may for new shire offices built in 1964. It was situated near the Eltham Railway Trestle Bridge on a site that was developed into the Eltham Common. The new Eltham Town Park was constucted opposite on the other side of what was to become Panther Place. In 1993/94 the new Eltham Library was constructed on the Eltham Common.
