In 1979, a series of photographs of significant gardens in Kew (Victoria) were taken during a tour by Peter Watts, Historic Gardens Coordinator of National Trust Victoria. These were later purchased to add to the collection. In the case of each photo the colour had badly degraded over time. One of a group of slides taken by members of the Society of built heritage in Kew in 1979-80. The selection of subject matter reflects the priorities of the period. The colour of some slides has degraded. This particular slide is of 'Fairholme' on the corner of Barry and Fellows Street. The building is listed by the National Trust (Victoria). The citation on the Historic Buildings Register states: 'Fairholme is of State architectural significance as a distinctive free Romanesque Revival residence. Built in two stages, 1889 for solicitor Edward Smart and early this century for importer, J K Meritt, the singular architectural character of Fairholme is achieved by combining window bays and groups of windows with a two-storey gabled porch. The deliberate and distinctively asymmetrical composition is emphasised by Art Nouveau pressed cement detailing (coprosma) on a bowed balcony and the two-storey timber verandah, which is typical of the Edwardian period. The architects were Reed, Henderson & Smart (1889) and C Gordon McCrae (c 1900-1). Internally a grand entry hall with inglenook, staircase and gallery follow the Arts and Crafts quality of the exterior. Ron Setford and his wife Grace Setford lived in Tanner Avenue, East Kew, from c.1946 to c.1995. A keen photographer, he recorded the changing face of Kew over a 20 year period. Apart from 30 photographs of built structures and places in Kew dating from 1960 and 1961, 145 of his 35mm colour slides chronicle the development of the F19 (later renamed Eastern) Freeway through the Yarra Valley in Kew over a five year period from c.1972 to c.1977. This important collection was donated to the Society by his granddaughter in 2025.This collection of 175 35mm slides is of local and statewide significance, owing to its subject matter, particularly the major development of road transport infrastructure during the 1970s with the construction of the Eastern Freeway. The series of 5 photographs feature different views of the Woodlands Housing Development which opened up land bounded by Gap and Anderson Roads, Cornish Street and Elizabeth Drive in the early 1990s. It was a large housing development built close to Sunbury township.A coloured photograph of one of the last housing developments which took place in the old township area. It is a photograph taken at the north end of Anderson Road looking towards Gap Road. One house has been built and there are a number of 'For Sale' signs of blocks fronting Anderson Road. Co-operative housing societies were loan societies established in the mid to late 20th century. They were based on the structure of a group of borrowers approximately 40, who lived within a radius of thirty miles joining a co-operative. They had the right to select their own site, plans and amount that they would like to spend. The co-operatives were administered by accounting firms. There were conditions placed on the borrowers in regard to amounts able to be borrowed and size of dwelling and percentage of cost which could be borrowed.The era of post-World War Two saw a shortage in a number of areas one of which was housing. The co-operative Housing scheme was preferred by many as it avoided the block approach which had been used by the Housing commission. Grace Winifred Faichney, 1909 - 1978, was the wife of the Very Rev Norman Faichney (1910—1998), Presbyterian and Uniting Church minister. The Bridge Hotel was built by Henry Hopwood, founder of Echuca. The building was in disrepair until it was bought by the Port of Echuca and renovated to be turned into part of the Port of Echuca tourist exhibits and was leased out to be run as a restaurant.The Bridge Hotel is of historical and social significance to Echuca as it was built be Echuca's founder Henry Hopwood. The hotel was situated between the 2 rivers, Murray and Campaspe, where Hopwood ran his punt business, charging people and animals to cross the rivers. The hotel accommodated a variety of paying guest from wealthy squatters to salesmen and general workers. The building was purchased by the Port of Echuca to be part of the tourist attraction. It was extensively renovated to bring it back to its former glory. The Bridge hotel played an important role in the TV series "All the Rivers Run". This Holiday Guide was produced by the Warrnambool Standard with several articles contributed to the supplement by Sally Clark, the Warrnambool Tourist Promotion Officer. Holiday Guides were produced each year to assist and promote tourism in the area. The fact that Warrnambool had won the Premier Town Award for the years 1979-1982 was an added reason for tourists to come to the region and this fact was used as an advertising tool. Warrnambool won the Premier Town Award in 1988 for the third time. This Holiday Guide is of some interest as it shows what was considered the best places for tourists to visit in the Warrnambool region in 1980. The advertisements are also of some value for recording the business life of the city in 1980.
