Colour slide of five ladies with a table of refreshments for legatees in a timber yard in Eildon. It was during Operation Firewood. They were wives of the legatees who were cutting and loading wood. Legatees would organise collection of wood from the country and distribute it to widows in metropolitan Melbourne. Other slides show the cutting and loading of wood and delivery to widows in metropolitan Melbourne. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Slide, Toys, 1963
Colour slide of a toy display. The toys were part of an arrangement with the Department of Education. Schools would produce the toys, often in wood work classes and they were donated to Legacy and Carry On. The toys were given to Junior Legatees at the Government House Christmas Party. Excess toys were passed to a dozen additional charities. The scheme started in 1949 and by 1962 over 8,200 toys were donated, from 201 schools. The total to that date was over 72,500 toys. It appears to be 1963 as there was space for the tally to be completed. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. 35mm slide, square format mounted in a "Kodak " cardboard slide mount with Kodak logos and printing of No. 21 decorated as the Myer Christmas tram for 1968 offloading a large number of Children outside Myers Store, Sturt St. Has Town Hall in background. Note that this offloading was on the "wrong side", driver standing in front of traffic and another person standing by the door supervising. Tram has been decorated as a "show boat" with a paddle wheel, waves and the side windows covered to resemble port holes. Destination box has been covered with the words "To Myers". Tram has a roof advertisement "Myers for Everything under the tree". Theme: Santa's Showboat. Slide, Robin Boyd, 1956-1957
Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit. On the way home, the Boyds visited London, Berlin, Paris and Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp Chapel in France.Colour slide in a mount.
