AIF Return from Active Service Badges WW1 (x2), circa 1914-1918
Badges such as this one were issued to soldiers by the Department of Defence to indicate they had returned from active service. It showed they had helped the war effort by serving their country. Sometimes returned soldiers were wrongfully accused of showing disloyalty to their country because they were not seen wearing a military uniform so wearing the badge helped avoid this. A number was often stamped on the reverse and a certificate was provided as authentication. Issued 1914 - 1919WW1 The Great War, issued to soldiers who had returned from active duty so as not to confuse the general public that the person whilst not in uniform or displaying medals had in fact served their country on active duty. Two crowned gilt bronze badges with two lugs on back. The obverse has the rising sun behind a crown AUSTRALIAN MILITARY FORCES; A.I.F; around the bottom, ISSUED BY DEPT. OF DEFENCE . RETURNED FROM ACTIVE SERVICE. Small pocket Holy Bible containing the old and new testaments, Oxford, printed at the University Press London. Black leather over cover upon hard cardboard front and back. Internal pages are soft parchment. The book spine has "Holy Bible" and Oxford annotated upon it. Spine contains the wording Holy Bible (top) and Oxford (bottom). Blank cover and back. Internal first page contains title contents and publication details. The front cover has ink handwriting detailing the following : "To Ebbie with best love and wishes and may god bless and guide you safe home from Auntie Bell and Gertie". Soldiers’ Memorial World War 1 with wreaths at base. The "Girl's Remembrance League" worked to raise money for the memorial to be built. Cost was 643.0.0 pounds. The memorial was unveiled on Saturday 10th Nov. 1923, by Archdeacon T.P. Bennett, (a respected pardre and old Stawell boy). Photo was copied from original donated by Mrs. L Matthew's whose mother Mrs. A. V. Cornish was a member of the Girls Remembrance League. Memorial was partly built by Robson & Grey, when partnership dissolved Mr. G.M. Robson completed the work. The Borough Council donated the land for the memorial.Black & white photograph of a World War 1. memorial. The fallen soldier statue is on a tiered granite base with flowers and wreaths around the base and steps of the memorial. There are two black & white photos one an enlargement. stawell ww1 -

Photocopy of a Luther Collage assignment on visits to war memorials and an investigation of Frank Isaac White, a name on the Mitcham War Memorial. White served in Egypt and France,. Maps show the route of his journeys including a period in hospital in England. Information is given about soldiers living conditions and his role as a artillery man. He was killed in Belgium on 20th September 1917 and buried in the Menin Road South Cematery at Ypres.
