This ash tray was given to a member of the Wodonga community by a veteran of World War 1 who served in the Royal Navy. The ashtray was made during "spare time" on board from discarded shell casings. The veteran, Howard Nation, came to Australia after the war and worked in several rural areas including Bairnsdale, Victoria. He spent time doing general farm labouring work and also occasionally worked on fishing trawlers operating out of Lakes Entrance.This ash tray represents the ingenuity of servicemen during World War 1.An ashtray made during WW1 from the discarded shell casings.war memorabilia, world war 1

One of a series of four boards of mounted replica medals of the Australian Defence Forces. This board shows medals pertaining to World War 1. Replicas include the 1914 Star, 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Mercantile Marine War Medal, 80th Anniversary of Armistice Remembrance Medal. Also a WW1 Memorial Plaque and Anzac Commemorative Medal. There is a cloth patch embroidered 'H.M.A.S.' and one with embroidered Air Force wings from the Australian Flying Corps. The text reproduced at the base accompanied the WW1 memorial plaques. Significant, one of the earliest details of the Red Cross Society in WW1 Very significant, very rare.Paper poster, headed Red Cross Society. Asking for interested citizen in the Camberwell/Canterbury area to form committees to raise 600 pounds to buy a fitted out Motor Ambulance to send over to France as part of the war effort. In October 1914 not one motor Ambulance was on the French front as the War office had banned any Red Cross involvement with wounded soldiers. Once General Kitchener was made aware of this situation he immediately overruled the ban and 100 motor ambulances and 1000 Nurses were sent to France. This fund raising by Camberwell Residents for a Motor Ambulance to be sent to France would have been among the first in WW1.See photo for complete details

Australian nurses were in France during WW1 and WW2, [Though Australian nurses in France during WW2 seems less documented], the fabric suggests being older than younger, however it is hard to date explicitly. Though not explicitly linked to nursing, Australia or which war period it is from, the handkerchief itself is in great condition and could illuminate the roles of Australian nurses in France. The ribbon bar is worn on the left hand side above the breast and the colours of the ribbons affixed determine the campaigns served and or other military awards with approval to wear.
