Administrative record - Mining Wages Book
John S Wearne First Manager of the Specimen Hill Co. W.H. Thomas Manager from September 1873. OBITUARY. Residents of the Borough of Eaglehawk will regret to learn of the death of Mr. John Wearne, a former well-known member of that community. The late Mr. Wearne, who was 68 years of age, came to Victoria in 1857. He was the first manager of the Specimen Hill mine and was also largely interested in several other mines in the district. Some considerable time ago he retired from active pursuits, and went to reside at Strathfieldsaye, whence he removed to Ascot Vale some years ago, where he lived until his death, his remains were brought to Eaglehawk by the mid-day train yesterday and conveyed to the family vault in the Eaglehawk Cemetery, many friends joining the cortege. Six members of the family survive — two sons and four daughters — Mrs. Wearne having pre-deceased her husband some time ago. OBITUARY. Set of negatives. Peter May, Joylon Burnett, James Hitchmough John Patrick and Greg Moore. The occasion was a debate that Greg Moore ran as part of Plant Sciences before he became Principal. Greg Moore thinks John Patrick was the moderator and they had a very highly qualified adjudicator from the debating society. It would have happened in about 1985 and there were only a few of them. Greg Moore thinks this one was on, "The Genus Eucalyptus Should Be Sub-divided." The debate was decided in the affirmative. They had a good roll up as you can see and all staff and students were invited to attend, not just those in the subject. students, debate, eucalyptus genus, greg moore, peter may, john patrick, joylon burnett, james hitchmaugh -

Copy of Titles, Thompson Print Co. Warrnambool, 1920s
This ledger contains copies of titles in the Warrnambool district, dating from 1916 to 1933. It came from the office of John William Crawley Junior, an engineer, surveyor and architect in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1895 to 1935. His father, brother and son were all engineers, working in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. This ledger was passed on John Crawley’s son, Rolf, who was the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. It then came into the possession of Michael Hand, who took over the private surveying business of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the ledger, along with several other Crawley ledgers, from the estate of Michael Hand. This ledger is of considerable importance as it contains copies of titles from the Warrnambool district in the early decades of the 20th century. It will be of great use for researchers. This is a hard cover book of 205 pages. The cover has red leather binding and is torn and scuffed. The book contains copies of titles and other handwritten and typed material and there are many loose titles, envelopes and miscellaneous sheets of paper. Inside the back cover is a booklet with an alphabetical index. This is pasted in. ‘Thompson Print Co. Work on paper - Booklet, Five Australian Christmas Carols
Five Australian Christmas Carols was written by John Wheeler and music by William G James. William James came from Ballarat and John Wheeler was from Colac. James was a concert pianist who graduated from the Melbourne Conservatorium. He went to London and played the Proms and wrote a series of Australian themed songs for Dame Nellie Melba. He became the first Federal director of Music for the ABC until 1957. It was at the ABC that he met Wheeler a staff writer who wrote verse and songs. These five carols which have a distinct Australian flavor, were written between 1848 and 1957.While this collection has no direct link to Warrnambool, the works contained in the collection Five Australian Christmas Carols would have social significance as the carols would be familiar to a number of people. They remain some of the few carols with which Australians would identify as being typically Christmas time in Australia with the mention of weather and nature at that time of the year.1Five Australian Christmas Carols with words by John Wheeler and music by William G James contains five Australian carols, The Three drovers, The Silver stars are in the Sky, Christmas Day, Carol of the Birds, Christmas Bush For His Adorning. 12 Pages.
