The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. The photograph depicts the magnitude of the tobacco industry in the late 1960s to 1970s era when many Myrtleford district growers contributed to the annual tobacco harvest. The impact of post-war migration from southern Europe was playing an important role in reaching harvest records.The photograph reflects the "golden years" of tobacco growing in the district, which continued into the 1970s, prior to later deregulation in the 1980s and 90s and the ceasing of production altogether in 2006. This sales floor attracted local farming families to observe activities off-season in Melbourne, before the sales were conducted at a complex in Myrtleford. The annual dawn-service held at Gallipoli on ANZAC Day is an event many Australians attend to commemorate the first ANZACs. The picnic was an annual event organised by the Ithacan Philanthropic Society from the early days of its inception and enjoyed by families. They were usually held at the beach or at a reserve in the countryside on Melbourne's rural fringe. The men in the photograph may have been the organising committee for the event.The annual picnics organised by the Ithacan Philanthropic Society gave members and their friends and families a chance to meet socially and to relax away from their workplaces. The Compressed Gas plant was part of the equipment installed to provide gas for the buses during the early stage of the Second World War. 'Rope on south drum broke last Saturday, it broke about 100 feet from the surface when the cage was at 2100 feet. No damage done to cage or shaft. We have got the rope out of the shaft abnd started baling. Will have the water out and resume sinking the shaft Saturday morning. A folder containing correspondence relating to the 3BO Ladies' Tennis Association dated from 5-5-39 to 12-11-1941. Such correspondence is in the form of report sheets. Each sheet is structured in columns headed Members present, Members absent with and without leave and New Members. Also includes fees received, absentee fees paid, Total. Cost of tea, milk and sugar included. On the back of each sheet there is provision for extra comments which are quite historical in nature. Many of them begin with 'Dear Chance' which was Lydia Chancellor's radio name on 3BO. Clubs reporting are Club No. 1 Ironbark and Clubs 2, 3 and 4. Formerly Folder 75. Report - six sheets, were paper clipped together, three foolscap (marked 4370A) and two quarto sheets (marked 4370C) titled "Lives of North Melbourne City Section ropes during 1917-18", regarding a claim made through Dalgety and Company (3/1/19 and 6/1/1919) for damage on a section of rope that was on a ship that was sunk by enemy action. Has a three page report on the cable life and insurance claim made by the Tramway Board in 1918, looking at the life of the cable compared to previous ropes. Quite a detailed study made and costs incurred.
