... ELSTERNWICK RAILWAY STATION AND LINE... ELSTERNWICK RAILWAY STATION AND LINE ...Contains three items about this: 1/A photocopied article (across 3 long columns) from the Southern Cross newspaper dated 21/07/1928. The article contains details of the opening of the Gardenvale Martin Street subway ceremony. Mention is made of the Caulfield Council’s spontaneous assistance, harmony working alongside Brighton and their financial assistance, as well. Councillor E.F. ... Railway Station stamps Cudgewa Line... Functional object Railway Station stamps Cudgewa Line ...Cudgewa Line -The Cudgewa railway line opened in stages between 1889 and 1921. The first section from Wodonga to Huon opened on 10 September 1889. It was extended to Bolga on 18 July 1890, Tallangatta on 24 July 1891 and then to Shelley on 13 June 1916. Shelley was the highest station in Victoria. It extended further on to Beetomba on 10 April 1919 and finally reached Cudgewa on 5 May 1921. The line had 1 in 30 grades and trestle bridges that have been heritage listed. In 1919, the line was used to carry materials for the construction of Hume Weir, and three years later a spur line connecting Ebden to the weir was opened. In the 1960s, Cudgewa became the railhead of materials for the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The last passenger service from Wodonga to Tallangatta ran on 30 September 1961. The turntable and passenger platform at Cudgewa were abolished in 1976.6 Rubber and wood stamps used in the stations along the Cudgewa Line. This is a picture of the railway station building which was built in c. 1865 ...This is a picture of the railway station building which was built in c. 1865. The railway line was built from Bendigo to Echuca in 1864. The left wing of the present building has an additional floor to the original building. Refer page 62 of Susan Priestley's book. "Echuca; A Centenary History." The Building of the Echuca Railway station was very significant to life in Echuca. It made travel easier for residents, but also it helped develop Echuca as the largest inland port in the world. Traders brought wool and wheat down the Murray-Darling river basin to Echuca where it could then be sent by rail to Melbourne for shipping overseas, or to other ports around Australia. Rail became a very successful partnership in making Echuca Port's busiest year in 1872.A coloured rectangular photograph of the Echuca Railway station taken in 1979. There are three cars parked outside. A motorcycle is parked under the verandah, where two people are also sitting. In the foreground there are yellow flowering weeds.railways, echuca railway station., priestley, susan -
